Crime Syndicate: NIS Intensifies Crackdown on Transnational Criminal Networks
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has recorded a major breakthrough against a crime syndicate operating across Lagos and Ogun States. The operation led to the arrest of 12 suspects, including the alleged leader of the transnational network, while two victims were rescued from the group’s illegal activities.
During the operation, immigration officers arrested Ouattra Adama, a Burkinabé national identified as the alleged leader of the syndicate. Authorities also apprehended 11 suspected facilitators, bringing the total number of arrests to 12. The suspects comprise eight Liberians, three Cameroonians, and the Burkinabé national believed to have coordinated the group’s activities.
The development marks another significant step in Nigeria’s campaign against irregular migration and organised cross-border crime.
The Service said the operation dismantled a fraudulent network linked to the QNET/IGNITE group, described as a transnational organised criminal syndicate. According to the agency, the group allegedly recruited and exploited victims through fraudulent business schemes while facilitating illegal migration activities. The crackdown followed weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance across both states.
A statement e-signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service Headquarters, Abuja, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, said the successful operation was driven by credible intelligence. The Service explained that security operatives intensified surveillance after receiving actionable information on trafficking syndicates operating within Lagos and Ogun States. Therefore, officers moved swiftly to disrupt the network before more victims could be exploited.
Meanwhile, officers rescued two Liberian nationals believed to have fallen victim to the syndicate’s operations. The Service said both individuals were removed from the criminal network during the enforcement exercise. In addition, officials confirmed that all 12 suspects and the two rescued victims have been transferred to the Nigeria Immigration Service Headquarters for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
The Nigeria Immigration Service said the operation reflects its determination to dismantle criminal organisations involved in trafficking and irregular migration. The agency stressed that intelligence-led enforcement remains central to its border management strategy. It added that such operations would continue across the country to prevent criminal networks from exploiting vulnerable people.
“The operational breakthrough was based on actionable intelligence on the activities of trafficking syndicates across Lagos and Ogun States,” the statement said.
It added, “The arrest of the syndicate leader and other facilitators demonstrates Nigeria Immigration Service’s commitment to intelligence-driven Border Management. It also underscores the Service resolve to rid the country of all forms of irregular migration and transnational organised crimes.”
The Service also urged Nigerians and foreign nationals to exercise caution before accepting employment, educational or business opportunities. According to the agency, individuals should verify every migration-related offer through appropriate government channels before making financial commitments or travelling abroad. However, many victims continue to fall prey to fraudulent promises because they fail to conduct proper background checks.
The latest operation highlights the growing importance of intelligence sharing in tackling transnational organised crime. It also demonstrates how coordinated enforcement can disrupt criminal networks before they expand further. As investigations continue, the Nigeria Immigration Service says it remains committed to protecting Nigeria’s borders while supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to combat irregular migration under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
