The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has received the Changemaker Climate Leadership Award. The recognition came at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards held on November 3, 2026, at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos. The award celebrates his leadership in advancing meteorological development, institutional reforms and climate intelligence for national development.

The honour formed part of the centenary celebration of The Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN), which marked 100 years of journalism and national influence. It recognised Professor Anosike’s contributions to strengthening meteorological services and repositioning NiMet as a more technologically driven, responsive and service-oriented institution. His leadership has also enhanced the strategic role of weather and climate information in supporting economic activities, protecting lives and strengthening national resilience.

The Changemaker Climate Leadership Award highlights the growing importance of meteorological institutions in addressing climate challenges. It also acknowledges the need for reliable scientific information in national planning, economic development and disaster preparedness.

Changemaker Recognition Highlights NiMet Reforms

Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in December 2023, Professor Anosike has pursued an institutional reform agenda. The programme focuses on strengthening NiMet’s scientific capabilities, modernising operations and improving the delivery of meteorological services.

Under his leadership, the Agency has continued efforts to ensure that weather and climate information translates into measurable public value. This approach recognises that meteorology extends beyond predicting atmospheric conditions. It provides essential intelligence for governments, businesses, communities and critical sectors of the economy.

In addition, the reforms reinforce meteorology’s importance to aviation, agriculture, disaster risk management and climate adaptation. These sectors depend on timely and accurate weather information to improve operational decisions, manage risks and protect investments.

For aviation, reliable meteorological information remains essential to operational planning and safety. Meanwhile, farmers and agricultural stakeholders depend on weather intelligence to guide planting decisions, manage production risks and protect livelihoods. Effective early warning information also helps communities and relevant authorities prepare for potentially damaging weather events.

Anosike Strengthens Climate Resilience and Global Engagement

Professor Anosike’s leadership has also positioned NiMet to contribute more actively to international discussions on climate resilience. These conversations increasingly emphasise early warning systems, sustainable investment and the application of scientific knowledge to development.

The recognition comes amid growing concerns about climate variability and change. Consequently, countries increasingly require stronger institutions capable of providing reliable information for preparedness, adaptation and informed decision-making.

NiMet’s role in this process extends beyond issuing weather forecasts. The Agency provides information that can support disaster risk reduction, economic planning and the protection of vulnerable communities. Its scientific capacity therefore remains important to Nigeria’s broader development priorities.

Furthermore, strengthening meteorological services supports national resilience by helping decision-makers understand weather-related risks. Access to dependable climate information can improve preparedness and reduce potential disruptions to economic and social activities.

The Changemaker award therefore recognises both Professor Anosike’s leadership and the institutional progress recorded under his stewardship. It draws attention to the importance of sustained investment in meteorological infrastructure, scientific expertise and service delivery.

DTN@100 Award Reinforces NiMet’s National Development Role

For NiMet, the recognition reinforces its commitment to delivering timely, accurate and reliable weather and climate information. The Agency continues to pursue services that support national safety, economic productivity and sustainable development.

The award also provides an opportunity to highlight the connection between scientific institutions and national progress. Strong meteorological services contribute to better planning across several sectors, particularly where weather conditions influence safety, productivity and investment decisions.

Under Professor Anosike’s leadership, NiMet continues to advance meteorological services beyond forecasting atmospheric conditions. Its broader responsibility includes providing actionable intelligence that safeguards lives, supports livelihoods and strengthens national preparedness.

For Professor Anosike and NiMet, the Changemaker Climate Leadership Award represents recognition of an ongoing institutional reform effort and the growing importance of meteorology to national development.
