UBA Advances Climate Awareness Through Green Finance and Community Action

Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has launched a Group-wide Climate Action Week to strengthen climate awareness, promote responsible environmental practices and advance sustainable finance across its operations.

The five-day campaign runs from October 26 to 30, 2026, under the theme “Banking on Africa’s Climate Future.” It highlights the Bank’s commitment to environmental responsibility, customer engagement and sustainable financing solutions across Africa and its international markets.

The initiative combines workplace changes, public education and community participation. UBA aims to encourage employees, customers and other stakeholders to adopt practical environmental habits while supporting businesses pursuing sustainable growth.

Climate Awareness Drives Practical Environmental Action

UBA commenced the campaign by deploying waste segregation bins across its offices and introducing measures to reduce single-use plastics at its head offices. These initiatives translate sustainability commitments into practical workplace activities.

Meanwhile, educational content across the Bank’s media and digital platforms will highlight climate change causes and consequences. Topics include rising food prices, increasing energy demand, urban flooding, responsible plastic disposal and recycling.

In addition, the campaign will examine how financial institutions can support clean energy, sustainable agriculture and environmentally responsible businesses. These efforts position climate awareness as an important part of sustainable economic development.

UBA Targets Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt for Clean-Up

As part of its community engagement programme, UBA staff volunteers will participate in a Group-wide clean-up exercise on Saturday, November 7, 2026. In Nigeria, the exercise will take place in Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt.

The initiative will mobilise employees to contribute directly to cleaner, healthier communities. It also reinforces the connection between environmental responsibility and everyday actions by individuals and organisations.

UBA’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, said collective responsibility remains essential to addressing climate change.

“Climate change is no longer a distant environmental concern; it is increasingly shaping everyday life across Africa. We see its effects in rising food costs, increased energy demand and flooding that disrupts homes, businesses and livelihoods.

“At UBA, we believe that building a sustainable future requires collective action, beginning with the choices we make at work, at home and in our communities. Through this Climate Action Week, we are encouraging every member of the UBA Tribe, alongside our customers and other stakeholders, to embrace practical, sustainable habits and inspire others to do the same,” Alawuba said.

Green Finance Strengthens Climate Awareness and Business Resilience

UBA will also sponsor Climate Convergence Week in Lagos on Friday, October 30. The Bank will deliver a speaking session and participate in a panel discussion on sustainability and climate resilience.

The engagement will showcase UBA Green Finance and explore how financial institutions can support Africa’s transition to a sustainable economy. It will also highlight the role of financing solutions in helping businesses adopt cleaner technologies.

Alawuba noted that climate considerations increasingly influence business resilience, risk management and long-term economic growth.

“Climate change presents significant risks to businesses, communities and economies. These risks can affect business continuity, operating costs and financial performance, making sustainability an increasingly important consideration for both businesses and the financial institutions that support them.

“Through UBA Green Finance, we seek to support eligible businesses ainvesting in cleaner technologies and more sustainable operations. By helping customers explore financing solutions aligned with their needs, we can contribute to a more resilient private sector while unlocking opportunities for sustainable economic growth across Africa,” Alawuba further said.

UBA is also set to join the Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria (SPIN). The move is expected to strengthen its environmental, social and governance expertise and support employees’ professional development in sustainability-related disciplines.

UBA Integrates Sustainability into Its Banking Strategy

The Climate Action Week forms part of UBA’s broader sustainability strategy, which integrates environmental responsibility into its Customer First philosophy. The strategy combines responsible business practices, employee engagement, community initiatives and green finance.

By linking climate awareness with practical action and financing solutions, UBA aims to encourage sustainable choices and help businesses and communities navigate climate-related challenges.
