FSG personnel begin five-day safety induction
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has begun a five-day indoctrination programme for newly recruited Flight Standards Group (FSG) personnel, with Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, charging them to become ambassadors of aviation safety and regulatory compliance. The course opened on August 3, 2026, at the NCAA Lagos Office Annex in Ikeja and aims to prepare the officers for critical safety oversight responsibilities.
The strongest news angle is the regulator’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation safety oversight by investing in the next generation of inspectors. Therefore, the new officers are expected to uphold the highest professional standards while helping the NCAA maintain compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements and sustain confidence in the country’s aviation system.
The Flight Standards Group (FSG) is one of the NCAA’s core operational divisions responsible for regulating flight operations and ensuring airlines, pilots, flight dispatchers, cabin crew and other aviation personnel comply with national regulations and ICAO standards. The group conducts inspections, certification, surveillance, licensing oversight and operational audits to ensure aircraft operations remain safe, secure and efficient across Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Speaking through the Director of Airworthiness Standards and Chairman of the FSG, Engr. Godwin Balang, Capt. Najomo urged the new officers to appreciate the significance of their responsibilities. He stressed that integrity, technical competence and professionalism must remain the foundation of every decision they make while carrying out the Authority’s safety oversight mandate.
He said, “The new Flight Standards Group personnel must champion safety and promote regulatory compliance, which are key drivers of the Authority’s safety oversight mandate.” He added that their work would directly contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation regulatory system and sustaining a proactive safety culture throughout the industry.
Capt. Najomo explained that effective safety oversight depends on knowledgeable and committed inspectors who can consistently enforce regulations without compromise. However, he assured the officers that NCAA management would continue investing in their professional development through regular training, retraining and the provision of modern tools needed to perform their duties effectively.
The Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr (Mrs) Anastasia Gbem, also challenged the participants to build careers founded on integrity and professionalism. She reminded them that aviation safety depends on discipline, ethical conduct and continuous learning. In addition, she urged them to remain safety conscious throughout their service with the Authority.
Regional Manager of the NCAA Lagos Office, Mrs. Olubukola Teriba, described aviation as a dynamic industry where safety remains the highest priority. She noted that the effectiveness of every aviation regulator depends on the competence, preparedness and professionalism of its personnel. Therefore, she encouraged the newly recruited officers to embrace excellence from the beginning of their careers.
While congratulating the participants, Teriba reminded them that regulatory oversight carries enormous public responsibility. She urged them to ensure strict compliance with established safety standards while maintaining fairness, consistency and objectivity in the discharge of their duties. She said their actions would influence public confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry for years to come.
The five-day programme forms part of the NCAA’s broader strategy to strengthen institutional capacity and maintain global best practices. Meanwhile, the training reflects the Authority’s commitment to developing highly skilled inspectors capable of supporting safe airline operations, effective regulatory oversight and sustained compliance with ICAO standards.
