Optimism surrounds the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, as global leaders convene in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November. A key focus is Nigeria’s Early Warnings for All roadmap, a pivotal initiative aligned with the United Nations’ goal to ensure universal early warning systems by 2027. Nigeria’s delegation, led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, includes top officials from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), highlighting the country’s commitment to climate resilience.

The Minister and NiMet representatives engaged with officials of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to explore areas of mutual interest. During these discussions, the delegation emphasized Nigeria’s need for enhanced support under the WMO’s Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF). Moreover, SOFF’s role in closing weather and climate data gaps has proven essential to global efforts in mitigating climate change impacts.

Also, Keyamo expressed appreciation for SOFF’s contributions while advocating for its expansion to middle-income countries like Nigeria. He further underscored the importance of comprehensive data sharing in improving the accuracy of global weather predictions. His call for inclusivity reflects Nigeria’s broader goal of advancing meteorological capacity for national and regional benefit.

Additionally, the meeting reviewed recent progress at Nigeria’s WMO Regional Center in Oshodi-Lagos. The recent reaccreditation visit by Paul Bujeac underscored the nation’s advancements in meteorological services. Bujeac commended Nigeria’s proactive approach, expressing confidence in its continued adherence to international meteorological standards. These strides reaffirm Nigeria’s growing role within the global meteorological community.

Side engagements also focused on bolstering Nigeria’s Early Warnings for All roadmap through technical and financial partnerships. This initiative is critical for safeguarding lives and property in the face of increasingly erratic weather patterns. The partnership between Nigeria and the WMO signals a collective resolve to mitigate climate risks through science and technology.

COP29 presents a unique platform for Nigeria to showcase its commitment to advancing meteorological science and addressing climate vulnerabilities. Through collaborative efforts, Nigeria seeks to enhance safety, efficiency, and resilience across critical sectors like aviation. Ultimately, these actions signify a strategic approach to leveraging international partnerships for sustainable development.
