A team from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), led by Mal. Ismaila Tanko, Director of Monotechnic Programmes, concluded an advisory inspection at the Oshodi-Lagos training facilities of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). This inspection aimed to accredit the National Diploma (ND) programme in Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences proposed by NiMet, to be offered at its NiMet/WMO Regional Training Centre.
The exercise, which lasted from the 25th to the 27th of July, 2024, aimed at accrediting the ND programmes. During the inspection, the NBTE team assessed the library, classrooms, students’ hostels, medical clinic, weather equipment, weather station, agricultural facilities, equipment fabrication and furniture workshops, printing section, GIS and ICT facilities, staffing, and other resources at the centre.
During the debriefing with Prof. Charles Anosike, DG/CEO of NiMet, who was represented by Prof. Peter Odjugo, Director of Research and Training, the NBTE team expressed satisfaction with NiMet’s cooperation during the exercise. Mal. Ismaila Tanko, head of the NBTE delegation, and other members including Dr. (Mrs) Kubura Jauro, Deputy Director of Specialized Division, and Mr. Nsan Tiku Nsan, Deputy Director of Monotechnic Support Division, noted the collaboration.
Mal. Tanko mentioned that the inspection results would be communicated to NiMet management soon. The DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed optimism about the accreditation. He stated, “The services NiMet render for the benefit of the Nigerian economy are specialized in nature. Our sector is currently experiencing a skills shortage in different areas. This is our response to solving that problem. It is also in line with the Aviation sector agenda of Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. Development of human capacity and ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by ICAO are all parts of that agenda which NiMet is working hard at contributing to.”
