The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), in a statement signed by Abdullahi Musa, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, has suspended its planned navigational charges increase. This decision follows the recognition by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, of the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

Keyamo emphasized the need for further consultation before implementing any changes. He highlighted the importance of being sensitive to the plight of Nigerians amidst these economic challenges.

NAMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, had announced the increment in his keynote address at the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents Annual Conference. Firstly, he highlighted significant economic pressures on the aviation industry, exacerbated by global economic volatility, fuel price hikes, and currency instability. Furthermore, Farouk outlined strategies for survival and growth, including operational efficiency, embracing innovation, strengthening infrastructure, and fostering collaboration and partnerships.

Moreover, Engr. Farouk also discussed the financial challenges NAMA faces. He noted that the agency relies on statutory fees and charges for managing the airspace. Consequently, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency had proposed an increase in its fees and charges. This increase aims to sustain operations and ensure the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace. Specifically, the new unit rate/minimum charge for en-route was set to increase to 18,000 Naira from 2,000 Naira per flight.

The unit rate/minimum charge for terminal navigation (TCN domestic) was set to rise to 54,000 Naira from 6,000 Naira. This change is effective from September 1.

NAMA will continue to engage the airlines, who have responded to the prevailing economic situation since 2008 without considering NAMA’s status. NAMA is a cost recovery agency in line with global practices.

The directive from the Minister and the suspension of the planned increase underscores the government’s commitment to addressing concerns. The suspension of the fee increase is a testament to the government’s responsiveness to public concerns. It also shows their commitment to balancing economic sustainability with citizens’ needs.
