AKADEMIYA2063 partnership to strengthen AI-driven climate services
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence, climate and weather data analytics, climate information services and evidence-based research. The partnership is expected to strengthen climate resilience, improve agricultural productivity and enhance food security across Nigeria.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, by NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). On behalf of AKADEMIYA2063, the documents were signed by the organisation’s Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, alongside Dr. Racine Ly, Director of Data Intelligence and Governance and National Representative for Senegal.
The collaboration marks another milestone in NiMet’s efforts to integrate emerging technologies into weather and climate operations. It also aligns with AKADEMIYA2063’s mission of strengthening Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking for sustainable development.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said NiMet is preparing for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation. He explained that the Agency had already established an AI Research Team to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning could improve weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.
“NiMet is positioning itself for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation. The Agency has already constituted an AI Research Team to explore the application of AI and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency. This partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 will further strengthen these efforts,” Prof. Anosike said.
He noted that stronger collaboration between both organisations would accelerate innovation while improving the delivery of climate information to critical sectors, particularly agriculture. According to him, the initiative will help provide more accurate forecasts and timely weather information for better planning and decision-making.
Meanwhile, Dr. Araba described the agreement as an important step towards strengthening Africa’s capacity in data and analytics. He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would create practical solutions that support climate resilience, food security and sustainable development across the continent.

As part of the implementation framework, both organisations agreed to collaborate on applying artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making. The initiative will strengthen AI-enabled climate services while supporting agricultural planning and disaster preparedness in Nigeria.
In addition, the partners will establish a Joint Technical Committee to coordinate activities under the MoU. The committee will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority projects, develop joint research initiatives and promote innovation that supports climate services and sustainable development.
The partnership reflects the growing importance of artificial intelligence in meteorology and climate science. Therefore, by combining scientific expertise, advanced data analytics and research capabilities, NiMet and AKADEMIYA2063 aim to provide smarter climate solutions that benefit farmers, policymakers and communities while improving Nigeria’s resilience to climate change.
