The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on March 18, 2026, issued an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to Binani Air, allowing the airline to commence scheduled flight operations. The certification represents a significant breakthrough in a sector traditionally dominated by male-led carriers.
At the Abuja presentation ceremony, Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of Civil Aviation, hailed the airline’s resilience and determination. He described the certification as a historic milestone for the emergence of a female-led airline in Nigeria’s aviation industry. Capt. Najomo commended the airline’s management team for their persistence throughout the rigorous certification process, noting their consistent efforts in meeting all regulatory requirements.
He stressed that while the AOC is a major achievement, it is only the beginning of a more demanding journey. Capt. Najomo advised Binani Air to prioritise meticulous planning, professionalism, and strict adherence to operational and safety standards. “In aviation, there is no room for shortcuts,” he said, highlighting the importance of maintaining high industry standards.

Sen. Aishatu Binani Dahiru, owner of Binani Air, thanked the NCAA for its professionalism and guidance throughout the process. She described the journey as both challenging and rewarding, underscoring the commitment required to achieve certification. Sen. Binani also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, for their unwavering support and efforts to create an enabling environment for private airlines.
The successful AOC award positions Binani Air to expand Nigeria’s domestic aviation network while contributing to regional connectivity. The airline is expected to introduce modern fleet operations, employ robust safety protocols, and offer competitive services to passengers. This milestone reflects the growing presence of female leadership in aviation, signalling a shift towards more inclusive industry practices.
In addition, the certification enhances Nigeria’s aviation landscape by increasing competition and encouraging innovation among carriers. Industry experts suggest that the entrance of Binani Air will stimulate efficiency and improved service standards across domestic routes.
Meanwhile, the airline plans to gradually roll out its operations, beginning with strategic domestic routes before considering regional expansion. Management has reiterated its commitment to customer satisfaction, operational excellence, and compliance with NCAA guidelines. Passengers can anticipate a combination of safety, comfort, and reliability as core pillars of Binani Air’s service model.
The NCAA has emphasised continuous oversight, ensuring all licensed operators maintain high operational and safety standards. For Binani Air, the AOC award is a signal to the aviation sector that determined leadership, thorough planning, and adherence to regulations are key drivers for sustainable success.
