Director General/CEO Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Professor Charles Anosike

The Director General/CEO Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Professor Charles Anosike, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to expanding climate-nutrition partnerships through the Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS) project. He expressed this commitment at the close-out ceremony hosted by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, explaining that the initiative demonstrates how collaboration can transform food systems nationwide. Meanwhile, he praised GAIN for promoting innovation that strengthens nutrition outcomes across Nigeria.

He commended GAIN’s SNIPS project and other stakeholders for their sustained effort to improve food quality and tackle malnutrition. According to him, the SNIPS project shows what becomes possible when institutions combine expertise, resources and shared purpose. Therefore, he described the initiative as proof that targeted interventions can reshape agricultural practices while supporting vulnerable communities.

Professor Anosike highlighted rising climate pressures affecting food production, noting that erratic rainfall and prolonged dry spells continue to reduce yields. He explained that NiMet’s role is to provide reliable weather information that helps farmers plan better. This, he added, improves productivity, reduces losses and strengthens access to nutritious staples. In addition, he emphasised that accurate forecasts enhance the long-term impact of the SNIPS interventions.

He stated that climate variability demands stronger partnerships across the agricultural value chain. Therefore, he underscored the importance of climate-smart farming tools that equip farmers to protect crops and adapt quickly. He explained that these measures support household nutrition and help secure food supplies. He also noted that the SNIPS project successfully linked nutrition-sensitive agriculture with data-driven climate practices across Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Oyo States.

In his remarks, he appreciated GAIN for prioritising women and young people throughout the programme. He stated that inclusive participation is essential for resilient food systems and stronger rural economies. Meanwhile, he added that providing training and decision-making opportunities encourages innovation at the community level, which is a major achievement of the SNIPS project.

Professor Anosike stressed that sustained collaboration remains critical to long-term food security. Therefore, he reaffirmed NiMet’s readiness to deepen partnerships with GAIN, government agencies and private investors. He said the Agency will expand early-warning services, strengthen farmer education and support new climate-smart technologies that align with national agricultural goals. He also noted that these efforts will help maintain the legacy of the SNIPS project.

“As we celebrate the achievements of SNIPS, we must look ahead,” he concluded. “Your dedication is shaping a healthier and more food-secure Nigeria, and NiMet is prepared to support ongoing collaboration with SNIPS PROJECT.”
