As migrant smuggling issues persist, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Lagos Command emphasizes education to combat migrant smuggling effectively. Comptroller D.O. Adebambo urged people to monitor their wards closely, discouraging risky migration choices. During a roadshow for the Command’s 3rd Annual Sensitization and Enlightenment Campaign Against Smuggling of Migrants, Adebambo engaged market women and transport workers. Officers carried banners and leaflets through the Obalende-Ikoyi area, using local dialects to educate the public on smuggler tactics and the inherent dangers of migrant smuggling.
Adebambo highlighted how economic hardships, desperation, and misinformation drive people into the hands of smugglers, perpetuating a global crisis. He stressed that difficult conditions in home countries and alluring prospects abroad contribute to the ongoing cycle. Acting DCG Charles Nonwahnge reinforced the importance of parental guidance, warning against harsh discipline, especially concerning unwanted pregnancy. “Such harsh reprimands can make young people vulnerable to smugglers,” he cautioned.

Nonwahnge explained that smuggled migrants often endure exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening conditions. Many migrants endure violence, forced labor, and even death due to unsafe travel methods, he added, highlighting the harsh reality. This troubling situation remains prevalent in numerous smuggling cases, he noted, stressing the urgent need for effective solutions. Addressing migrant smuggling effectively requires both international cooperation and strong legal measures to deter smugglers and protect vulnerable individuals. Support systems that foster safe migration are essential, helping to combat migrant smuggling effectively while addressing poverty and conflict issues.
ACG ME Oniledewere, Zonal Coordinator of Zone A, extended her remarks to the officers and men of Lagos Command. She encouraged them to strive towards achieving the CGIS mandate set by Kemi Nanna Napdap. Oniledewere emphasized that officers’ commitment is essential to achieving the goal against migrant smuggling. She added that their disposition remains crucial in the ongoing fight against smuggling and illegal migration.
The event also included a symposium that emphasized inter-agency cooperation and citizen involvement to curb migrant smuggling. Participants discussed addressing root causes, strengthening governance, and fostering sustainable development solutions as part of a proactive approach to migration challenges.
