The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced the successful recovery of the Sikorsky SK76 Helicopter Blackbox from the ocean after it ditched off the coast of Bonny Finima. In partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Navy, and HydroDive, NSIB confirmed that they retrieved both the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). This recovery of the Sikorsky SK76 Helicopter Blackbox will support NSIB’s investigation to prevent future accidents.

The recovery mission underscores the collaborative efforts among Nigeria’s safety and maritime agencies in strengthening aviation safety standards. As NSIB analyzes the blackbox data, their investigation into the incident aims to uncover the sequence of events leading to the accident. The helicopter, operated by Eastwind Aviation, was carrying eight passengers when it tragically crashed. Despite ongoing efforts, three passengers remain unaccounted for, and search operations are continuing.

The blackbox will be promptly transferred to the NSIB’s data lab, where specialists will begin extracting and analyzing data. This step is crucial in understanding operational factors and cockpit interactions, clarifying the events preceding the crash.

“The recovery of the Sikorsky SK76 Helicopter Blackbox marks a monumental step in understanding this tragic accident,” said Captain Badeh. He emphasized, “The black box holds vital data, providing insights into the sequence of events leading to the crash, helping us determine its cause and guide safety recommendations.”

This Helicopter Blackbox recovery breakthrough marks a crucial step, though the search for missing individuals continues. Captain Badeh expressed sympathy for the affected families, reaffirming NSIB’s commitment to a transparent investigation.
