The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured international certification for aeronautical meteorological services at three more Nigerian airports. The certification covers Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports under the agency’s ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System. The development followed a successful third-party audit by Certech Inc. Canada, conducted between July 20 and 23, 2026.
The achievement strengthens NiMet’s international certification status across its aviation operations. It also advances the Federal Government’s drive to improve safety standards and Nigeria’s standing with global aviation and meteorological bodies. The initiative follows a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to ensure strict regulatory compliance and continued improvement in Nigeria’s WMO and ICAO ratings.
International Certification Expands NiMet’s Aviation Quality Standards
The audit examined NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services delivered to the aviation industry at the three airports. Certech found the agency’s processes and services compliant with ISO 9001:2015 requirements after a rigorous assessment. The international certification therefore represents a formal recognition of the systems supporting weather information used by airlines and other aviation stakeholders.
NiMet’s latest international certification also extends a quality framework already operating at several major airports. The agency said it was successfully recertified at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
The certification is valid for three years and will remain subject to annual surveillance and maintenance audits. The next recertification is scheduled for 2029. This structure means NiMet must continuously demonstrate that its quality management processes remain effective rather than relying on a one-time assessment.
The latest international certification is particularly significant because Yola, Osubi and Owerri underwent their first ISO 9001:2015 audit for aeronautical meteorological products and services. Their successful assessment brings the three locations into the agency’s expanding quality management framework.
In a July 26 letter to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, Certech Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, confirmed the outcome. He said the surveillance audit objectives were achieved, with the assessment focusing on systematic processes, risks and organisational objectives under ISO 9001:2015.
Certech subsequently issued a revised certificate stating that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for providing meteorological services to the aviation industry. The finding gives further weight to NiMet’s international certification drive and its efforts to standardise service delivery across operational locations.
For airlines, reliable meteorological information remains essential to flight planning and operational decision-making. NiMet routinely provides aviation weather information that supports safe and efficient operations, including airport-specific weather reports used by airline operators. Anambra, Lagos, Kano and Other Airports Already Certified
Professor Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, welcomed the latest international certification. He credited the agency’s Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, for working continuously to meet the required standards.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” Professor Anosike said.
The statement positions the latest international certification as part of a broader quality improvement programme rather than an isolated achievement. It also reflects the agency’s intention to extend consistent standards to more operational locations across Nigeria.

However, the airports specifically named in the statement total seven, while Osubi is included among the three newly certified locations but omitted from the later list.
