The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) recently organized a training session focused on the balanced scorecard performance management system for its senior management. Held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in partnership with Balanced Scorecard West Africa, the event underscored NiMet’s commitment to improving organizational performance. The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized that staff welfare and capacity development are integral to the agency’s strategic goals.
In his opening remarks, Professor Anosike highlighted the alignment of the training with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s seven-point agenda and the performance bond signed with the Aviation Minister, Mr. Festus Keyamo. “We are starting a new journey at NiMet as we prepare to roll out a balanced scorecard performance management system,” he stated. The system, he explained, is a global tool used by organizations to translate strategy into measurable performance, fostering innovation and sustainable growth.
He further elaborated on the benefits of the balanced scorecard performance management system, describing it as a framework for aligning organizational goals with measurable outcomes. “Value-creation activities in organizations are no longer strictly measured in tangible things and fixed assets. Instead, value lies in the ideas of people in the organization, in service delivery and supplier relationships, in key information databases, and in cultures capable of innovation and continually delivering quality,” he explained.
The training also aimed to enhance NiMet’s strategy formulation capabilities, enabling the agency to communicate its objectives effectively to stakeholders. According to Professor Anosike, the session will help NiMet identify creative solutions and drive operational excellence. “This workshop will help us to improve our strategy formulation, our ability to formulate strategies, and make way for enduring creativity in the agency,” he added.
Concluding his address, Professor Anosike urged participants to embrace performance management as a critical foundation for improving organizational performance. “Strategy dictates the path forward. It is not the change effort itself that is likely to cause the failure. It is always the execution and development, the implementation, execution, and development,” he noted. This call reflects NiMet’s dedication to fostering a results-driven culture aligned with the balanced scorecard performance management system.
The training session reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to building a high-performance organization capable of delivering quality services while adapting to the evolving demands of the aviation industry.
