The Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) has praised Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). She was commended for implementing the Annual Firefighters Medical Certification Tests across FAAN-operated airports in Nigeria.
First, the initiative aims to ensure the health and fitness of firefighters, given the hazardous nature of their duties. Mrs. Kuku stressed the importance of the program, saying, “I will not take the health of our firefighters for granted. Their job is inherently dangerous, and health is wealth.”
Next, the medical tests, the first of their kind in FAAN’s history, assess the overall health of firefighters. They help mitigate the risk of mortality during active service. This move demonstrates FAAN’s commitment to safeguarding its personnel’s well-being.
Finally, Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday, National President of NAFSA, applauded Mrs. Kuku’s leadership. He highlighted the successful implementation of the tests at international airports, calling for an extension to domestic airports. He added that the health of all firefighters, regardless of location, is equally important.
Ugbeikwu also noted that NAFSA had previously proposed the initiative to former FAAN Managing Directors. Both Capt. Rabiu Hamisu Yadudu and Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed Kabiru supported the idea, but it was under Mrs. Kuku’s leadership that the program was fully implemented.
The Annual Firefighters Medical Certification Tests represent a crucial step in ensuring the health and safety of FAAN’s firefighting personnel. By prioritizing their well-being, FAAN aims to enhance operational efficiency and reduce risks. Industry stakeholders have widely applauded the program, seeing it as a model for others to follow.
