The initiative aims to empower staff and stakeholders with the necessary skills to leverage climate information for resilience building.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and IRI to enhance climate data capacity. The training is part of the Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project (2024-2026), implemented by Sahel Consulting.
First, the training will occur in two parts: from February 18 to 21, a Training of Trainers (ToT) session, followed by a second session from February 24 to 28 for NiMet staff. The IRI, part of Columbia University’s Climate School, will lead the sessions, which will be cascaded to participants from relevant ministries and agencies.
Next, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to improve staff capacity. He emphasized the importance of access to high-quality climate data for making informed and sustainable climate decisions.
Finally, Prof. Anosike highlighted the broader benefits of this training, stating it would enhance the effectiveness of climate services in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
