Nigeria’s aviation modernisation agenda received fresh momentum as Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, engaged major global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and aviation stakeholders at the second El Alamein International Airshow in Egypt.
The high-level engagements also extended to a Saudi Arabian delegation, with discussions focusing on early preparations for the 2027 Hajj season. According to Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, Tunde Moshood, the meetings provided Nigeria with opportunities to strengthen international partnerships and advance practical solutions for the aviation sector.
The prestigious airshow was presided over by President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, alongside President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Nikos Christodoulides. Against that backdrop, Nigeria used the international gathering to deepen relationships with major players shaping the global aviation industry.
Aviation modernisation takes centre stage
The Minister’s engagements formed part of broader efforts to accelerate aviation modernisation and improve the efficiency, safety and competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation sector. In particular, discussions with leading global OEMs examined practical areas where international expertise and partnerships could support the upgrading of aviation facilities across the country.
According to Mr Keyamo, the meetings created an opportunity to address some of the infrastructure requirements needed to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem. He said such engagements were important to the government’s efforts to build a more efficient and sustainable sector.
“The occasion afforded us the opportunity to meet major OEMs from around the world and engage in discussions regarding upgrading our aviation infrastructure across the country. These engagements are important as we continue to position Nigeria’s aviation industry for greater efficiency, safety, competitiveness and sustainable growth.”
Nigeria’s participation at the El Alamein International Airshow also provided a platform for the country to showcase its aviation ambitions to an international audience. Meanwhile, the presence of major manufacturers and aviation stakeholders created opportunities for discussions beyond aircraft acquisition, including infrastructure development and sectoral cooperation.
2027 Hajj preparations begin early
Alongside the OEM discussions, Mr Keyamo held talks with the Saudi Arabian delegation on preparations for the 2027 Hajj operations. The engagement reflects the importance of starting the aviation component of the pilgrimage well ahead of the next season.
The discussions are expected to support improved planning and coordination for the movement of Nigerian pilgrims. This includes considerations around air transportation and the need to ensure that pilgrims experience a more seamless journey during the 2027 Hajj season.
Early planning could also help Nigerian aviation authorities and stakeholders identify operational requirements before the pilgrimage period begins. Consequently, closer coordination with Saudi counterparts could contribute to smoother arrangements and reduce avoidable pressures during the peak travel period.
OEM partnerships support sector growth
The meetings with Original Equipment Manufacturers remain particularly important to Nigeria’s aviation modernisation plans because aircraft manufacturers and other global aviation companies possess technical expertise that can support sector development.
The government’s engagement with these companies could create opportunities for knowledge exchange and technical cooperation. It could also strengthen efforts to modernise facilities and improve the overall capacity of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Mr Keyamo’s discussions at the airshow therefore brought together two important priorities for the sector: long-term modernisation and immediate operational planning. While OEM engagements focused on strengthening the foundations of the industry, the Saudi discussions addressed long-term preparations for a major annual movement of Nigerian travellers.
