Airbus Southern Africa, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), and the Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO) have signed a four-year tripartite agreement to advance aerospace engineering in South Africa.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a strategic collaboration linking advanced aeronautical education with aerospace manufacturing and design.

The agreement is designed to equip South African engineering students with globally recognised qualifications. It will also support local industrialisation and encourage a culture of aerospace engineering across the region. Through the partnership, the three institutions will create a framework connecting academic training, research, industry expertise and international exposure.

Aerospace Engineering Through Advanced Education

Under the agreement, Wits University and ISAE-SUPAERO will align their aerospace engineering curricula through comprehensive gap analysis and mapping. This process will identify opportunities to strengthen academic content and provide students with knowledge relevant to advanced aerospace engineering design capabilities.

Meanwhile, the collaboration will introduce a reciprocal faculty exchange programme between Johannesburg and Toulouse. The exchange is expected to give Wits students access to cutting-edge knowledge in aerospace engineering while creating a foundation for recurring student and faculty exchanges.

The agreement will also establish common academic mechanisms between the institutions. Consequently, Wits students will benefit from access to specialised aerospace Master’s programmes and advanced research methodologies in France.

The initiative therefore places international academic cooperation at the centre of the partners’ approach to aerospace development. It seeks to strengthen knowledge transfer while giving students greater exposure to specialised training and research opportunities.

Airbus Country Representative in South Africa, Nam-Binh Hoang, spoke on the collaboration.

“This collaboration connects academic excellence with industrial expertise to empower the next generation of South African aeronautical engineers,” said Hoang.

He added that the partnership brings together Wits University’s local expertise, ISAE-SUPAERO’s aerospace training and Airbus’ operational footprint.

“By combining the local expertise of Wits University, the world-class aerospace training of ISAE-SUPAERO, and Airbus operational footprint, we are building a sustainable talent pipeline that supports both local innovation and global aerospace standards.”

Industry-Academia Partnership Targets Aerospace Skills

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation at Wits University, Professor Lynn Morris, said the agreement would strengthen the university’s ability to deliver advanced engineering education.

“Partnering with global leaders like Airbus and ISAE-SUPAERO enhances our capability to deliver world-class engineering education,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation at Wits University, Professor Lynn Morris.

According to Morris, the agreement will give students access to advanced aerospace modules, international exposure and practical research opportunities linked directly to industry needs.

The collaboration also reflects the partners’ focus on developing skills that can support aerospace development through stronger links between education and industry. In addition, the exchange of academic expertise is intended to create opportunities for sustained cooperation between Johannesburg and Toulouse.

President of ISAE-SUPAERO, Marie-Hélène Baroux, described international academic collaboration as important to addressing future engineering challenges in the aerospace sector.

“International academic collaboration is essential for tackling the complex engineering challenges of tomorrow’s aerospace sector,” said Baroux.

She said the institution was proud to contribute to the development of aerospace engineering skills in South Africa through its partnership with Wits University and Airbus.

Baroux further said the industry-academia partnership would support the training of graduates capable of meeting the needs of the local aeronautical ecosystem.

Four-Year Framework for Aerospace Development

To support implementation, the MoU establishes dedicated operational and executive oversight teams across the three institutions. These teams will provide coordination and conduct regular progress reviews throughout the four-year term.

The oversight structure is intended to support effective execution of the agreement. It will also provide a framework for monitoring progress as the partners implement their academic, exchange and engagement activities.

Beyond formal academic cooperation, the partnership will focus on increasing general aviation awareness and promoting technical career paths in South Africa.

Airbus will engage Wits University students through awareness events and design-thinking mentorship. The company may also support potential undergraduate aviation courses aimed at improving aircraft operations.

These activities broaden the scope of the collaboration beyond traditional classroom learning. They also create opportunities for students to engage with aviation and aerospace concepts through industry-linked activities.

Looking ahead, the collaboration is expected by the partners to contribute to South Africa’s high-tech manufacturing sector. It also aims to position local engineering talent to participate in sustainable aviation technologies and future aerospace breakthroughs worldwide.

The three-way agreement consequently creates a shared framework for advancing skills and knowledge across the participating institutions. Its central focus remains connecting education and industry to strengthen aerospace development and support the next generation of engineering talent.
