Nigeria’s fight against fraudulent migration has intensified as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) warned citizens against rising illegal travel schemes across the country.
In a statement signed by Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, the NIS said criminal networks now target vulnerable Nigerians with fake promises of jobs, education, and better opportunities abroad. The Service warned that many victims later face forced labour, trafficking, and severe exploitation.
The NIS explained that organised groups continue to exploit desperate youths through deceptive migration arrangements. According to the agency, young women and girls remain the most vulnerable targets of these illegal operations.
The Service stressed that irregular travel exposes citizens to dangerous conditions, including abuse, detention, and exploitation in foreign countries. Therefore, it urged Nigerians to follow lawful immigration procedures at all times.
According to the statement, it remains illegal for anyone to leave Nigeria without a valid passport, visa, and other required travel documents. The agency added that no legitimate international travel process bypasses approved immigration channels or authorised border posts.
The NIS also warned Nigerians to avoid accepting sponsorship offers, travel fares, or relocation assistance from unknown persons or unverified agents. It noted that many fraudulent migration schemes begin with seemingly attractive offers designed to lure unsuspecting victims.
Fraudulent Migration Threatens Vulnerable Nigerians
The Service advised members of the public to verify every travel opportunity through recognised government channels before making commitments. In addition, it urged citizens to avoid individuals promoting irregular migration or unlawful border movements.
The agency further encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious persons, recruitment agents, or movements linked to fraudulent migration activities. Reports can be made at any Nigeria Immigration Service formation or through relevant security agencies nationwide.
DCI AS Akinlabi stated that public vigilance remains critical in tackling illegal migration operations. He explained that stronger cooperation between citizens and security agencies would help reduce exploitation and trafficking cases.
The NIS also appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people about the dangers associated with irregular migration. According to the Service, awareness remains one of the strongest tools against human trafficking and cross-border exploitation.
Meanwhile, the immigration agency reaffirmed its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting citizens from criminal migration networks. It noted that security operatives continue monitoring suspicious movements and strengthening border surveillance operations nationwide.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns over human trafficking and illegal migration routes affecting many African countries. International agencies have repeatedly cautioned that irregular migration exposes travellers to unsafe routes, exploitation, and organised criminal activities.
The International Organization for Migration has also highlighted the dangers associated with irregular migration across Africa and Europe. However, the NIS said citizens can protect themselves by following approved travel procedures and verifying all migration-related information before travelling. The agency urged Nigerians to use only licensed and credible channels for international travel arrangements.
