Nigeria has officially implemented a 30-day visa exemption policy for Rwandan Nationals entering the country for lawful activities. The development follows the directive announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the recent Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) confirmed that all arrangements for the policy rollout have been completed. The Service said the initiative reflects growing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Rwanda. In addition, authorities believe the move will strengthen tourism, trade, and regional integration across Africa.
In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service Headquarters, Abuja, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the agency explained that Rwandan Nationals can now enter Nigeria without a visa for up to 30 days.
According to the statement, the visa-free entry applies to lawful purposes including tourism, business engagements, and official assignments. However, travellers intending to stay beyond the approved duration must obtain the appropriate Nigerian visa.
DCI Akinsola Akinlabi stated that affected individuals may process extended stay approvals through Nigerian Embassies, High Commissions abroad, or the Nigeria e-Visa platform.
The Nigeria Immigration Service also directed all international entry points to begin immediate enforcement of the new policy. These entry points include airports, land borders, and seaports nationwide.
Meanwhile, the policy is part of Nigeria’s broader effort to deepen bilateral cooperation with African nations. Authorities say the arrangement mirrors Rwanda’s existing visa-free access granted to Nigerian citizens.
Rwandan Nationals to Benefit from Easier Regional Travel
Industry observers believe the new policy could encourage stronger economic and cultural exchanges between both countries. In addition, aviation and tourism stakeholders expect increased passenger traffic on routes connecting Nigeria and Rwanda.
The initiative aligns with ongoing continental efforts to improve intra-African mobility under the African Union’s regional integration agenda. Experts have repeatedly argued that easier travel policies can stimulate business growth and tourism across the continent.
Furthermore, the Federal Government believes the policy supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Officials insist the visa exemption for Rwandan nationals will maintain lawful migration standards while simplifying travel procedures for eligible visitors.
DCI Akinsola Akinlabi said: “The Nigeria Immigration Service notes that this initiative reflects the strong diplomatic and bilateral relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Rwanda, while promoting intra-African mobility, tourism, and economic cooperation in line with continental aspirations.”
The Service added that it remains committed to safe, orderly, and lawful migration management in accordance with international best practices.
The latest decision places Nigeria among African countries expanding visa liberalisation policies to improve connectivity within the continent. Several African governments have recently introduced similar measures aimed at removing travel barriers for African citizens.
However, immigration authorities emphasised that security screening and border control measures remain fully operational at all approved entry points. Officials stressed that all travellers must still comply with Nigeria’s immigration laws and regulations.
The Rwandan nationals visa exemption implementation comes at a time when African leaders continue pushing for deeper economic cooperation through trade and travel reforms. Stakeholders believe seamless movement across borders remains critical to unlocking the continent’s economic potential.
