Bristow Helicopters has officially introduced the Airbus H160 helicopter into commercial service in Nigeria, marking the aircraft’s first deployment in Africa for offshore energy operations and rescue missions. The unveiling in Lagos represents a major milestone for both Bristow Group and Nigeria’s aviation industry as the country becomes the launch market for the helicopter on the continent.

The ceremony, attended by regulators, oil and gas stakeholders, aviation leaders, Airbus representatives and Milestone Aviation executives, showcased the medium twin-engine helicopter as the next generation platform for offshore logistics, search and rescue (SAR), and emergency medical services (EMS) in one of Africa’s busiest energy markets.
Airbus H160 helicopter strengthens offshore operations
Speaking during the unveiling, Managing Director of Bristow Helicopters, Capt. Dapo Oyeleke, described the introduction as another landmark in the company’s long history of supporting Nigeria’s aviation and energy sectors.
“For over six decades, Bristow has been the trusted wing and backbone of Nigeria’s offshore energy logistics,” Oyeleke said.
“From our strategic hub here in Lagos to the vital operational bases across the Niger Delta, we have continued to fly through eras of change, every day, without fail, with purpose and with an unwavering commitment to safety and excellence.”
He reflected on the company’s evolution from agricultural aviation to offshore oil support.
“From the period when agriculture was the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, where Bristow was heavily involved in crop spraying and survey activities across Northern and Eastern Nigeria, to the early discovery of oil with the Shell-BP consortium in 1956, Bristow has pioneered the introduction of no less than 15 aircraft types and variants into Nigeria.”
According to him, one principle has remained unchanged throughout that journey.
“Throughout this journey, we have always been guided by one unwavering principle: to move people, freight and equipment safely, efficiently and reliably. Today, we are reinforcing that promise.”
The deployment makes Nigeria the first country in Africa where Bristow will operate the H160 in support of offshore energy production and rescue services.
Safety and advanced technology at the core
Bristow’s Senior Manager, Operations and Service Delivery, Clement Falayi, said the introduction reinforces the operator’s commitment to delivering the highest safety standards.
“Today, Bristow is reinforcing the promise of safety. By launching the Airbus H160 right here in Nigeria, its very first operational home in the energy sector in Africa, Bristow is once again bringing into service aircraft with the highest global standards, equipped with full IOGP 690-compliant next-generation technology.”
The Airbus H160 helicopter is regarded as one of the world’s most technologically advanced medium helicopters. It features the Helionix avionics suite, advanced autopilot systems and digital cockpit technology designed to reduce pilot workload while improving situational awareness.
In addition, the aircraft provides enhanced operational capability in challenging offshore environments, particularly around the Niger Delta and deep-water oil fields.
The 12-passenger helicopter also delivers an estimated 18 per cent reduction in fuel consumption per passenger. Its Blue Edge rotor blades reduce external noise and cabin vibration, while larger windows and improved acoustic insulation provide greater passenger comfort during offshore flights.
Supporting Nigeria’s energy industry
The Airbus H160 helicopter aligns with Bristow’s strategy of deploying modern, IOGP 690-compliant aircraft capable of supporting shallow and deep-water offshore activities.
Meanwhile, its improved helideck accessibility, maintenance-friendly design and mission flexibility make it suitable for offshore transport, search and rescue operations, and emergency medical evacuation.
These capabilities are expected to improve efficiency for energy companies while helping operators meet carbon reduction targets through lower fuel consumption.
Furthermore, the helicopter’s advanced automation allows flight crews to operate more effectively during demanding missions without compromising safety.
Investment in Nigerian aviation professionals
Beyond introducing a new aircraft type, Oyeleke said the project represents a significant investment in Nigerian talent.
“This launch is a definitive victory for Nigerian content and local capacity. By bringing the Airbus H160 helicopter to Nigeria, we are opening doors of global opportunity for our local pilots, engineers and technical teams.”
He added that Bristow is investing heavily in developing Nigerian professionals capable of operating and maintaining one of the world’s most advanced commercial helicopters.
The company has already trained more than 600 Nigerian pilots and engineers over the years. According to Oyeleke, the H160 programme will further strengthen local technical expertise through continued recruitment, specialised training and skills development.
The initiative also aligns with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Chevron’s Human Capacity Development programmes, ensuring local professionals acquire globally recognised technical competencies.
Industry collaboration drives certification success
Oyeleke acknowledged the support received from key stakeholders throughout the certification process.
He thanked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Airbus and Milestone Aviation for their collaboration.
According to him, their guidance, oversight and partnership were instrumental in successfully completing all five phases of the certification programme.“The collaboration, professionalism, and forward-thinking regulation provided by these institutions were instrumental to introducing the Airbus H160 helicopter and advancing safety, innovation, and industry development in Nigeria.”
The successful introduction of the aircraft demonstrates the growing cooperation between regulators, aircraft manufacturers, leasing companies and operators in strengthening Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
A new chapter for Bristow and Africa
The arrival of the Airbus H160 helicopter marks another significant milestone in Bristow’s more than 60-year presence in Nigeria. However, it also signals Africa’s entry into a new generation of offshore helicopter operations.
With improved safety systems, lower emissions, greater passenger comfort and enhanced mission capability, the aircraft is expected to redefine offshore transport and rescue operations across the region.
Concluding the ceremony, Oyeleke expressed confidence in the future of Nigeria’s aviation support industry.
“The sky is no longer our limit; it is a canvas upon which we will continue to shape and transform the future of aviation support in Nigeria.”
The introduction of the Airbus H160 helicopter not only strengthens Bristow’s fleet but also positions Nigeria as the gateway for next-generation offshore aviation services across Africa.
