United Nigeria Airlines has pledged N20 million to support Nigerian authors and secure the future of the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction for the next decade. The airline will provide N2 million annually under the agreement with the Association of Nigerian Authors, ensuring the prestigious literary award can continue despite recent funding uncertainty.

The sponsorship was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, after discussions with the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi. The agreement provides a structured funding commitment rather than relying on yearly sponsorship decisions. Therefore, Nigerian authors will have greater certainty as the association plans future editions of the prize.

Nigerian authors secure long-term backing for Achebe prize

Under the arrangement, United Nigeria Airlines will pay N2 million each year for 10 years. The total commitment will therefore reach N20 million when the sponsorship period is completed.

The intervention comes after the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction faced financial difficulties over the past three years. The annual award was launched in 2021 through a partnership between the Anambra State Government and the Association of Nigerian Authors under the leadership of the association.

The initial sponsorship began with N1 million under former Governor Willie Obiano. When former Governor Chukwuma Soludo assumed office in 2022, his administration continued the arrangement and accepted the association’s request to double the annual support.

That increase reflected rising inflation and higher administrative expenses. It also covered costs associated with running the prize, including payments to judges and other organisational requirements.

However, the Association of Nigerian Authors said the state government later appeared to lose interest in continuing the sponsorship. The association said several letters were sent to remind the government of its earlier commitment.

That uncertainty placed the future of the Chinua Achebe Prize under pressure. United Nigeria Airlines subsequently stepped forward to provide a more sustainable funding arrangement for the award.

United Nigeria Airlines moves to protect Achebe’s legacy

Announcing the intervention, Dr. Akanbi quoted Professor Okonkwo as saying Achebe was too important to allow the prize established in his honour to suffer unstable funding.

“Prof Achebe is too precious in our consciousness for the award to continue to suffer the current epileptic funding,” Professor Okonkwo said.

The United Nigeria Airlines chairman also explained why the company decided to assume the sponsorship. He said Achebe’s contribution to African literature and intellectual life justified a commitment of this scale.

According to Professor Okonkwo, very few literary and cultural figures have brought as much recognition to Africa as Achebe. He cited the late author’s writings, lectures, speeches, intellectual activism and ethical conduct as part of his enduring contribution.

He also described Achebe as an authentic conscience of the Nigerian people. The airline’s latest commitment therefore extends beyond corporate sponsorship. It represents another effort by Professor Okonkwo to preserve and promote the late author’s legacy.

For Nigerian authors, the agreement also provides an important measure of institutional stability. A decade-long commitment gives the association greater confidence when planning the prize and engaging writers, judges and other stakeholders.

ANA praise airline’s literary intervention

Dr. Akanbi, who is also a senior academic at the University of Ilorin, welcomed the sponsorship. He described the intervention by Professor Okonkwo and United Nigeria Airlines as patriotic.

The president of the Association of Nigerian Authors also highlighted Achebe’s importance to the association itself. Achebe founded ANA in 1981 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and became its first president.

The association’s official history confirms that it was founded in 1981 during a conference convened by the late Professor Chinua Achebe.

Dr. Akanbi said Professor Okonkwo had consistently supported efforts to preserve Achebe’s memory and influence. He pointed to the chairman’s role in financing a statue of Achebe in Ogidi, the author’s hometown.

The statue was unveiled in July by Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The latest sponsorship therefore follows other initiatives aimed at keeping Achebe’s legacy visible. It also places United Nigeria Airlines among corporate organisations supporting Nigerian literary and cultural institutions.

Achebe’s name takes to the skies

The airline’s relationship with Achebe’s legacy has also extended into its fleet.

In June, United Nigeria Airlines named one of its two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after the late Professor Achebe. The second aircraft was named after His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

The decision reflects Professor Okonkwo’s stated determination to honour figures whose values and contributions remain important to Nigerian society. The latest support for Nigerian authors adds a direct literary dimension to that effort.

For the Association of Nigerian Authors, however, the N20 million commitment could have an even broader significance. The funding provides a predictable financial foundation for one of Nigeria’s notable literary prizes while reducing dependence on changing government priorities.

The association’s stated mission includes promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage, literary enterprise and the interests of writers.

The Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction consequently represents more than an annual competition. It connects Nigeria’s literary tradition with the legacy of one of Africa’s most influential writers.
