New Domestic Airports are set to reshape Ethiopia’s aviation landscape as Ethiopian Airlines announces the inauguration of three additional gateways. The airline confirmed plans to commence passenger services to Negele Borena, Gore Metu, and Debre Markos by mid-April 2026. Therefore, the new domestic airports expansion signals a decisive step in strengthening national air connectivity.

New Domestic Airports Boost Connectivity

The domestic airports initiative will see thrice-weekly passenger flights to each destination. Meanwhile, the expansion increases Ethiopian Airlines’ domestic network to 26 airports nationwide. The move reinforces the carrier’s position as Africa’s largest network operator and deepens regional integration.

Speaking on the development, Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mesfin Tasew, described the new domestic airports project as transformative. He emphasised that expanding air access stimulates economic activity and regional inclusion. In addition, he noted that reliable connectivity empowers communities and unlocks new commercial opportunities.

According to Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mesfin Tasew, the inauguration represents a milestone for both the airline and Ethiopia’s broader development agenda. However, he stressed that the goal extends beyond route expansion to sustainable national growth. Therefore, the new domestic airports strategy aligns with long-term economic priorities and infrastructure planning.

As Ethiopian Airlines integrates the new domestic airports into its schedule, attention remains focused on modernising domestic travel. The airline continues infrastructure upgrades and service enhancements across its network. Meanwhile, operational standards remain aligned with global best practices supported by the International Air Transport Association.

It will be recalled that the airline inaugurated Yabello Airport as its 23rd domestic destination in 2025. The new domestic airports addition now further strengthens internal mobility and tourism potential. Consequently, Ethiopian Airlines advances its ambition of building an inclusive and efficient air transport system.
