The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will soon undertake an inspection visit to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Lagos. This inspection follows NiMet’s application for the accreditation of National Diploma (ND) courses offered at the Centre.
Professor Charles Anosike, Director General of NiMet, said, “The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) not only provides weather information but also trains manpower in the fields of Meteorology and Climate Sciences.”
He continued, “The World Meteorological Organisation Regional Training Centre (RTC) Oshodi, Lagos, established in 1957, is responsible for the Meteorological Manpower Training for NiMet.”
Anosike noted, “Over the years, the WMO RTC has been running and issuing only certificate courses because it has no national monitoring and accrediting body. This is not good enough.”
To address this issue, Professor Anosike explained, “We approached NBTE Kaduna, to express interest in Diploma Programmes in ND Meteorology and ND Climate Change Science. Gladly, NBTE approved the advisory/resources inspection visit to RTC Oshodi, as a precursor to running ND programs at RTC, Oshodi, Lagos.”
