A five-day World Meteorological Organization (WMO) training workshop on numerical weather prediction (NWP) data assimilation opened today in Abuja, Monday, 22nd July 2024.
The training draws participants from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, stated NiMet’s commitment to advancing meteorological science and improving weather prediction capabilities.
He said, “We recognize that capacity building and continuous professional development are essential components of this mission. This workshop aligns perfectly with our goals, and we are delighted to host such a pivotal event.”
Professor Anosike thanked the WMO for their contributions towards capacity development among NMHS in West Africa. “Around this time a year ago, Dr. Kyungjeen Park, a Numerical Weather Prediction expert from the WMO, was in Nigeria. He conducted training on operationalizing the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the Agency. We are glad to report that we have implemented the model, and it is operational. We want to say, ‘thank you’ to WMO and to Dr. Park.”
“Over the next few days, participants will engage in intensive training sessions, hands-on exercises, and collaborative discussions. I encourage you all to actively participate, learn from each other, and share experiences,” Prof. Anosike concluded.
The numerical weather prediction (NWP) data assimilation workshop ends on Friday, 26th July 2024.
