The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) completed its re-accreditation visit to NiMet’s RTC Oshodi in Lagos. This visit held every eight years, lasted five days and included a detailed evaluation. Dr. Paul Bugeac, Coordinator of Learning and Development at WMO, led the assessment team from WMO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The team thoroughly assessed NiMet’s RTC Oshodi, reviewing training, facilities, and overall standards.
At the review meeting, Dr. Bugeac addressed previous concerns about NiMet’s RTC, calling past complaints “very drastic and tough.” He expressed his initial frustration, stating, “Things were really bad.” He added, “I am impressed by what I see here now.”
Dr. Bugeac praised significant improvements in facilities, including the hostels, air conditioning, and solar-powered infrastructure that ensures uninterrupted power. He noted, “The example of Nigeria’s RTC will inspire others,” while further highlighting advancements in training and the evolving curriculum. Furthermore, he commended NiMet’s dedicated staff and assured continued collaboration with WMO.
In response, NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, warmly thanked Dr. Bugeac for recognizing the progress achieved at NiMet’s RTC Oshodi. He stated, “I am happy to hear that only documentation remains outstanding for our re-accreditation.” Moreover, he praised NiMet’s team of hardworking meteorologists and scientists, expressing confidence in completing the required documents swiftly.
He also highlighted the dual accreditation of the institution by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to offer Diploma courses in meteorology-related disciplines.
Professor Anosike further credited Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, for the successful re-accreditation visit to NiMet’s RTC. “We have achieved all these things because we have a courageous leader in the Honourable Minister,” he said, adding that Keyamo’s understanding of meteorology’s importance to national safety protocols was key to the institution’s transformation. Anosike conveyed the Minister’s gratitude and expressed commitment to upholding the high standards observed by the WMO team. “We are going to wait for your reports, study them, and respond positively,” he affirmed.
