Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, has directed foreign airlines to patronise local caterers for on-board outbound meals. This directive aims to boost local businesses and enhance the quality of meals served on outbound flights from Nigeria. Keyamo clarified the reasoning behind this mandate in a recent tweet, emphasizing that foreign airlines must stop bringing frozen meals.
The tweet, specifically written after a directive was issued in a letter signed by H.T. Ejibunu, director overseeing the office of the permanent secretary to the NCAA. According to the letter the new policy would take effect on January 1, 2025. It read, “I am directed by the Honourable Minister of Aviation to convey his decision to mandate that all outbound flights from Nigeria, especially foreign airlines, must patronize local caterers for on-board meals.
Furthermore, this statement highlights that local caterers are the preferred option for meal preparation on flights departing from Nigeria.
Explanation
Keyamo elaborated, “This clarifies that directing foreign airlines to use our local caterers does not mean they must serve local dishes.”
He emphasized that local caterers are capable of preparing a variety of cuisines, including continental options, per the airlines’ specifications. This flexibility allows airlines to continue offering diverse meal options while supporting the local economy.
Moreover, the minister addressed concerns about food safety, saying, “We also have quality control agencies to supervise the hygienic nature of those meals, if that is their concern.” This assurance should help alleviate any apprehensions regarding the quality and safety of locally sourced meals. Keyamo further noted that if foreign airlines trust the quality of meals brought into Nigeria, they must trust local caterers.
In conclusion, Keyamo stressed the importance of supporting local businesses, asserting, “We must support our local businesses with our population.” The Nigerian government implements this directive to foster economic growth, create opportunities for local caterers, and ensure quality meals on flights.
