A Dana Air aircraft suffered a Runway excursion (skidded off the runway) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport.

The affected aircraft is a Mcdonald Douglas (MD-83) with registration 5N-BKI which it operates with Boeing classics.

The aircraft said to be flying in from Abuja had 83 passengers on board. The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau has deployed to the site of the serious incident.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority clarifying details about the runway excursion stated that it occurred at 08:25. The aircraft, carrying 83 passengers and 6 crew members, experienced a nosewheel retraction upon landing at MMIA. This caused the nose of the aircraft to collapse, and it veered off the runway into the grassy area.

Acting Director General, Captain Chris Najomo’s statement confirmed that Runway 18L was closed following the incident. He also affirmed that the NSIB has initiated its investigation into the occurrence as per statutory procedures.

Dana expressed relief, confirming that all 83 passengers and crew disembarked safely without injuries. The crew demonstrated professionalism in handling the situation.

In its statement, Dana expressed gratitude to airport authorities and the crew for swiftly ensuring passenger safety. The airline apologized to affected passengers for any inconvenience and thanked them for their understanding.

Dana emphasized that passenger safety remains its top priority and assured cooperation with authorities in investigating the incident.

A runway excursion occurs when an aircraft departs the runway in use during the take-off or landing run. The excursion may be intentional or unintentional.
