After an unidentified man was electrocuted inside FAAN’s powerhouse, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) intensified its security measures at Lagos airport.

On Monday, FAAN’s Managing Director commissioned 30 of the 120 trained Special Forces to secure the airport and prevent unauthorized access at the MMA. Additionally, the Aviation Security (AVSEC) Special Force has been trained to bear arms as part of their mission to beef up security across airports in the country. This step aims to address past incidents, where individuals crossed perimeter fences to steal airfield lighting equipment or harm workers.

Mrs. Kuku, Managing Director of FAAN, confirmed a recent incident at FAAN’s powerhouse. She revealed that a middle-aged man was electrocuted inside FAAN’s powerhouse while attempting to steal electrical cables and equipment. The man, whose identity remains unknown, had gained access to the power generating building and begun disconnecting installations supplying power to the airport when he met his tragic end.

New Security Measures

Kuku said, “We are starting with the five international airports where the 120 commissioned personnel will be deployed.” Particularly, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. There is a similar exercise going on. Specifically, we have about 120 people who have been trained. It is a recurring training program. In Lagos, I believe we have about 30 of them.”

“As mentioned, the special squad role will be to critically work with all of the other security agencies. This is very important. And I say it’s a significant milestone. You can see them, they’re gallant, they’re kitted, they’re ready to protect, and they’re ready to serve.”

Mrs. Kuku emphasized, “Our environment is unique with certain security challenges. Fortunately, we haven’t faced major incidents within airport environments, but we do encounter individual security breaches. We’ve seen people crossing fences, trying to steal airfield lighting equipment, or harm personnel. Recently, someone entered our powerhouse and got electrocuted.”

She further explained that FAAN has been anticipating the unveiling of new security measures for the past six months, including discussions about funding and arming aviation security staff. FAAN has made significant investments in the armory, personnel training, and acquiring arms and ammunition.

The FAAN MD stated to the newly commissioned security personnel, “We have specially selected you for this unit. We hope there’s no need to use your arms but to use them as a deterrent. Work closely with other security agencies at the airport to keep it safe and secure.”

Mrs. Kuku expressed her satisfaction with the new unit, saying, “I’m happy to have you on board. Furthermore, this select unit within FAAN is a significant addition, and we look forward to seeing your performance.”

Expectations and Collaboration

She added, “The Honourable Minister, the National Security Adviser, and the President send their regards. Moreover, they are excited about your role in this elite squad. You have our full support, and all security agencies are working closely together.”

Mrs. Kuku concluded by emphasizing FAAN’s commitment to fighting corruption, touting, and illicit activities at terminals nationwide. Additionally, she noted, “We’re collaborating with all security agencies, including the Air Force’s intelligence unit, police, and civil defense. Today marks a remarkable day in our journey, and we expect you to make us proud. Furthermore, you have our support.”
