The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed a significant boost in air operations following the signing of the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction. This approval allows 10 more aircraft to join the fleets of Nigerian airlines, ensuring festive flight continuity and reducing disruptions during the high-demand Yuletide season. The enhanced capacity aims to address long-standing challenges in the aviation sector, particularly during peak travel periods.
During a Road Show/Enlightenment Campaign at Port Harcourt International Airport, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, emphasized the importance of empowering passengers. He explained that the campaign seeks to inform travelers about their rights and responsibilities while providing avenues to resolve complaints effectively. “We are creating mass awareness to bridge the knowledge gap among passengers, ensuring they know the NCAA is the right place to report issues,” Achimugu stated.
Furthermore, Achimugu assured passengers that the measures implemented would eliminate disruptions during the festive season. He highlighted the crucial role played by the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction, which facilitated the addition of 10 aircraft to Nigerian airlines like Ibom Air, Air Peace, and United Nigeria. He remarked, “This increase in fleet capacity addresses Nigeria’s persistent operational challenges, ensuring smoother air travel experiences.”
To complement the roadshow, the NCAA hosted a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt under the theme: *”Repositioning the Nigerian Aviation Industry for Operational Efficiency, Service Excellence, and Economic Viability: A Renewed and Inclusive Regulatory Dialogue.”* Key stakeholders, including actress Hilda Dokubo, legal expert First Baba Isa, and representatives from Nigeria Immigration Services, participated, contributing diverse perspectives on enhancing the sector’s operational efficiency.
The NCAA’s efforts also focus on reinforcing its regulatory framework to protect both passengers and airlines. Achimugu noted that Nigeria stands out globally for achieving 100% refund resolutions without charges, a milestone in consumer protection. He reiterated the authority’s commitment to continuous sensitization campaigns to empower stakeholders and maintain operational excellence.
With additional fleets and enhanced passenger education, the NCAA is set to deliver a seamless flight experience this Yuletide and beyond. These initiatives demonstrate the regulator’s dedication to fostering service excellence and economic viability in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
