In a bid to keep pace with global airspace modernisation, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is intensifying efforts to integrate automation.
Nigeria, in the rapidly advancing landscape of aviation technology, recognizes the necessity of automation to remain abreast of the evolving aviation sector.
ADS-B:
To this end, Mohammed Odunowo, NAMA’s Managing Director, ardently advocates for the swift adoption of cutting-edge technologies to drive this transformative shift.
Central to this evolution is the transition from conventional ground-based navigation to the more sophisticated satellite-based navigation facilitated by Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B).
Meanwhile, Odunowo explains that ADS-B is a revolutionary surveillance technology empowering aircraft to ascertain their positions through satellite navigation. The technology also carries out periodic broadcast of this information. This enhances situational awareness and air traffic management significantly.

Highlighting the United States’ NextGen initiative success story, Odunowo emphasises its comprehensive approach to enhancing safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability in aviation.
“Automation is crucial for ANSPs; it forms our lifeline. The U.S., with its NextGen program, successfully shifted from ground to satellite-based ADS-B, leveraging GPS superiority,” Odunowo explains.
This transformative journey involves the implementation of ADS-B, optimization of air routes, and the fortification of communication systems.
Odunowo underscores the pivotal role of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) at the forefront of global efforts in airspace modernisation. Initiatives like ‘Single European Skies’ in Europe, ‘Seamless Asia’ in the UAE, and Africa’s ‘OneSky,’ exemplify the global momentum towards air traffic flow management interoperability.
NAMA’s Intent:
Currently, NAMA is bolstering Nigeria’s position in this modernisation race through strategic measures, deploying fibre infrastructure across its 46 stations. This is in collaboration with Galaxy Backbone—a high-capacity network infrastructure. This tech not only supports ADS-B but also ensures robust data transmission, reliability and comprehensive coverage.
Recall in 2017, NAMA, solidified its commitment to deploy the ADS-B system by signing an MOU with Aireon LLC of the United States. This strategic alliance is testament to NAMA’s dedication to embracing futuristic technologies for a seamless transition for efficient airspace management.
With the trajectory firmly set, NAMA stands resolute leading the charge for airspace modernisation. It means to ensure that Nigeria catches up and takes a pioneering role in shaping aviation through cutting-edge automation.
