The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has conducted various proficiency checks for air traffic controllers since December 2023. These efforts include the Annual Proficiency Check for 339 air traffic controllers in conjunction with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). Additionally, NAMA executed the Promotion Proficiency Check for 69 air traffic controllers. To further strengthen operational capacity, the agency carried out English Language Proficiency Checks for 243 controllers, aligned with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations. This move, according to a statement by Abdullahi Musa, Director of Public Affairs, is crucial for closing existing gaps ahead of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP). Proficiency checks for air traffic controllers are vital for ensuring safety, enhancing skills, and maintaining compliance with global aviation standards.

Speaking during the annual air traffic management workshop at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, NAMA’s Managing Director, Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar, detailed further accomplishments. He confirmed that **87 air traffic controllers passed the NCAA Certification Examination Rating**, and 91 controllers secured new or renewed ATC licences, ensuring compliance with ICAO Document 9426. Represented by Mr. John Tayo, the Director of Air Traffic Services, Engr Farouk emphasized the ongoing efforts to optimize the capacity of critical personnel through continuous training and retraining.

In addition to these advancements, NAMA is preparing to fully deploy the Air Traffic Control 3-D Tower Simulator at Lagos Centrex, which will enhance real-time training for controllers. Similar facilities are being planned for Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano airports, reflecting the agency’s commitment to improving air traffic management. Urging air traffic controllers nationwide to maintain dedication, the NAMA boss reiterated the administration’s focus on ensuring efficient utilization of communication, navigation, and surveillance infrastructure across the country.
