THE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said that investigation is ongoing into the case of the mysterious mangled body found on Runway 18R/36L on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
According to the agency, the body was discovered during derruberization and sweeping of the runway at about 0106hours and as a result the runway was closed between 0110 and 0343 hours to allow for the remains to be evacuated.
A statement signed by Ag General Manager,Corporate Affairs, Faithful A. Hope-Ivbaze (Mrs.) read:
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public of an incident in which an unidentified human remains were found on Runway 18R/36L on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
“A motorized cleaner, that was cleared to carry out a derruberization and sweeping of the runway discovered the remains at about 0106hours, and escalated the situation to relevant departments.
“As a result, between 0110 and 0343 hours, the runway was temporarily closed to allow for immediate evacuation of the remains.Flight operations resumed at 0343 hours.
The Airport Police Command on Friday also confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the death of the unknown man whose body was found on Runway.
DSP Olayinka Ojelade, the Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikeja that the unidentified body might probably be that of one of the hoodlums who usually jump through the airport fence.
“l can confirm that a mangled, unidentified body was found at the International Airport runway on Thursday which was probably hit by taxing aircraft.
“We are still investigating the case of the dead body and once we are through we will communicate to you our findings.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force yesterday evacuated the corpse from the runway,” he said.
