Green Africa Acquires First Aircraft, Backed by Access Bank Financing

This aircraft will play a crucial role in our next phase of growth, allowing us to deepen our footprint in Nigeria and explore new routes across West Africa

Green Africa Airways has acquired its first fully owned aircraft—an ATR 72-500 (Manufacturer’s Serial Number 852, Registration 5N-GAB)—with partial financing provided by Access Bank, one of Africa’s leading financial institutions. The aircraft is expected to enter service shortly after completing standard regulatory approvals, further strengthening the airline’s domestic and regional operations.

Since its launch in August 2021, Green Africa has operated as a wet-lease carrier, relying on aircraft leased from other operators. This acquisition marks a pivotal transition toward fleet ownership, signaling long-term stability and growth ambitions. The ATR 72-500, a fuel-efficient turboprop, is well-suited for regional connectivity, aligning with Green Africa’s mission to provide affordable, reliable, and eco-conscious air travel across West Africa.

Babawande Afolabi, Founder & CEO of Green Africa, commented, “The acquisition of our first owned aircraft is a testament to the hard work of our team and the trust our partners and customers have placed in us. This aircraft will play a crucial role in our next phase of growth, allowing us to deepen our footprint in Nigeria and explore new routes across West Africa. Our vision remains clear: to make air travel more accessible while maintaining our reputation for punctuality, affordability, and exceptional service.”

Access Bank, a subsidiary of Access Holdings Plc, facilitated the acquisition through a Naira-denominated debt facility, reinforcing its commitment to fostering sector-defining businesses in Africa. The bank’s support highlights its confidence in Green Africa’s business model and its potential to reshape regional air travel.

Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank, stated: “At Access Bank, we prioritize financing ventures that drive economic transformation, and Green Africa perfectly embodies this vision. The airline has demonstrated resilience, innovation, and a strong value proposition since its inception. We are proud to support this milestone, which not only strengthens Green Africa’s operations but also contributes to aviation infrastructure development in Nigeria and beyond.”

Green Africa entered service during the COVID-19 pandemic, a challenging period for global aviation. Despite initial hurdles, the airline has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most punctual and cost-effective carriers, earning a loyal customer base. With this new aircraft, Green Africa is poised to increase flight frequencies, optimize operational efficiency, and explore underserved routes—further stimulating economic activity in the region.
