The Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA) has proposed a partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to enhance risk data accessibility and modeling.
During a visit to NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, on May 2, 2024, Alastair Norris and Renuka Srinivasan from GRMA discussed potential collaborations. They aim to leverage open-source platforms and standards for risk financing, providing technical support through joint projects.
Professor Anosike welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its potential to enhance forecasting and dissemination capabilities at NiMet.
Prof. Anosike said, “Nimet welcomes the idea of the proposed partnership with GRMA to support our efforts and improve our forecasting and dissemination capacity”.
NiMet plays a crucial role in issuing early warnings to farmers, utilizing seasonal climate predictions (SCP) to guide agricultural decisions.
Additionally, NiMet provides vital weather and climate advisories to the aviation sector through pilot briefings and daily updates.
GRMA, funded by the German government, focuses on leveraging public and private sector expertise to bolster risk analysis in vulnerable communities. Its focus is to enhance risk data accessibility.
Accompanying the GRMA team during the visit were Falemi Ayodeji from the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Mrs. Gloria Onyegbule from the Department of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), and Mr. James Ijampy, Chief Meteorologist at NiMet.
