The Nigerian Meteorological Agency emphasizes the need to register weather stations operated by oil companies across Nigeria’s coast, citing their illegality under the new NiMet Act.

Director-General Professor Charles Anosike emphasized the importance of the Act, stating, “The new NiMet Act requires registration of these illegal stations.”

During the MoU signing with the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Professor Anosike highlighted collaboration’s significance in achieving registration compliance.

Professor Anosike also stressed the importance of this partnership in advancing weather observation and research, crucial for the institution’s goals.

He stated, “We seek FUPRE’s collaboration to ensure these stations are duly registered, as mandated by law. Additionally, our partnership will enhance climate risk data collection, positioning NiMet as a key center in oil and gas risk dissemination.

Professor Anosike emphasized the potential of NiMet’s forthcoming e-learning services, urging FUPRE to leverage them for joint course offerings.

Echoing this sentiment, FUPRE’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, expects NiMet’s support in establishing observatory stations and training personnel in weather data.

“The MoU signifies our mutual commitment to advancing meteorology and climate change research in Nigeria. Through joint efforts, we aim to enhance training, research, and public awareness,” Professor Rim-Rukeh stated.

Under the MoU, NiMet will install Resident Observatory Stations (ROS) within FUPRE’s premises, fostering collaborative research and training initiatives.

The signing ceremony, attended by NiMet’s Director of Legal Services, Barr. Shola Gabriel, and FUPRE staff, underscores the commitment of both parties to bolstering weather observation and research capabilities.

In conclusion, NiMet and FUPRE’s partnership marks an era of collaboration, advancing meteorological research and fostering climate-resilient practices in Nigeria.
