Last week, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sahel Consulting. This collaboration aims to bolster sustainable climate monitoring and tackle early warning system challenges within Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Underlining the significance of early warnings, Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director General, emphasized the crucial role they play in safeguarding citizens.
“The importance of Early Warning Systems cannot be overstated,” he affirmed, expressing NiMet’s readiness to collaborate with capable organizations to bolster preparedness and protect the populace from climate-related disasters.
The Climate Early Warnings project, spearheaded by Sahel Consulting Agriculture and Nutrition Limited in partnership with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and NiMet, will implement several key initiatives.
These initiatives include deploying six Meteorological Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) across Nigeria and establishing a Mapping Room. Additionally, the project will focus on enhancing the capacity of NiMet staff and other government agencies in Nigeria through training programs.
The implementation team comprises experts from various organizations, including the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) of Columbia University, New York, USA.
