As part of the ongoing collaboration between the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State, both institutions held a one-day workshop on Thursday, 25th July 2024. This workshop focused on the downscaling of the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) for Delta State.
In a keynote address, the DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Anosike, was represented by Mrs. Glory Onyegbule. Mrs. Onyegbule, the Director of Applied Meteorological Services, thanked Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh for hosting the workshop. The event aimed to build resilience among smallholder farmers by identifying adaptation options and best practices. It also focused on finding adaptation gaps to increase productivity for these farmers.
Prof. Anosike continued, saying, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu outlined the government’s eight-point agenda for moving the Nigerian economy forward. This includes food security, ending poverty, economic growth, and job creation.”
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is positioned to climate-proof the economy by providing timely weather and climate information.”
He concluded by highlighting that NiMet collaborates with key stakeholders like the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Universities, development partners, NGOs, and CBOs are also part of this collaboration. NiMet has been providing crucial weather and climate information through these partnerships. This includes the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and the Crop Weather Calendar. They also offer the Dekadal Agromet Bulletin and other early warning products for smallholder farmers across the country.
