The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost environmental monitoring and national resilience.

NiMet-CERT-ABU partnership was formalized under the leadership of ABU Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed.

NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the value of scientific collaboration in national development. “Our collaboration with CERT-ABU will support joint research in climate science, enhance radiological monitoring—including in aviation—and foster climate-smart agricultural practices. Together, we are leveraging science to improve livelihoods and build national resilience,” he said.

Professor Anosike noted that meteorological data is central to improving public safety and agricultural yields. It also plays a critical role in early warning systems and climate adaptation planning.

He added that the collaboration would include soil mapping, the downscaling of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and capacity building across agriculture, aviation, and energy sectors.

The NiMet-CERT-ABU partnership is expected to promote synergy in research and data utilization, particularly in addressing climate variability and environmental risks.

Speaking at the MoU signing, Professor Adamu Ahmed commended NiMet’s efforts in providing timely and accurate weather and climate data that support food production and disaster risk reduction.

He stated, “Through this partnership with NiMet, we look forward to joint activities in radioactive materials mapping, technical training, and the development of tools and strategies to enhance environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety.”

He emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration in driving Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda.

The partnership aims to enhance national capacity to respond to environmental hazards and food insecurity. It also opens up pathways for advanced training, including technical workshops and knowledge-sharing across academia and government.

Moreover, the MoU provides a framework for research outputs that inform policy decisions, especially in the areas of radiological safety, weather-sensitive agriculture, and public health.

The NiMet-CERT-ABU partnership marks a significant advancement in environmental data integration and national planning strategies.
