For Airport Security Collaboration and better passenger experience, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) have teamed up. FAAN and ONSA aim to reduce redundant baggage checks at Nigeria’s international airports. Decades of complaints about excessive checks by various security agencies have led to delays and inconvenience for travelers.

In response to stakeholders’ calls for a more efficient process, FAAN MD, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, announced short and long-term measures. These include creating a joint coordination room equipped with CCTV cameras for enhanced surveillance.

Mrs. Kuku expressed concern over the issue and revealed her proactive approach, including direct discussions with the NSA. She emphasized the need to minimize disruptions while maintaining security standards.

FAAN MD said “On the issue of the checking of baggage, it borders me so much. That was the first inquiry that I made when I assumed office. As far back as 2012 when I was in the industry, this was something I worked on with the former Minister.”

She said “It actually goes beyond FAAN, we have Customs, NDLEA, Quarantine, Agriculture, EFCC almost everybody is at the airports. We had Executive order 001 during the Buhari administration to move them out under the then Vice President office. Now we have the National Single Window. I have personally sat with the NSA over the last five weeks as to how we will streamline the facilitation.”

Addressing the concerns, Mrs. Kuku clarified the reasons behind baggage inspections, citing global security protocols. She highlighted efforts to implement dual-view cameras and relocate explosive detection devices for secondary checks without opening bags.

Acknowledging passengers’ frustrations, Mrs. Kuku compared practices at other international airports, noting similar secondary screenings for select destinations. She assured travelers of ongoing efforts to improve coordination and enhance security measures.

“A lot of countries had issues with scanning devices that were coming from certain countries this caused the secondary screening. You will see that some of the airlines have companies doing secondary screening on their behalf but a lot of passengers will think that it is FAAN because we are the face of the agency and the airports.”

“But that doesn’t take away from the coordination room that we have, so we take responsibility, we are trying to solve it. We are trying to have dual view cameras and put them and explosive devices a bit farther so that we are doing a secondary check without opening your bags.”

The collaboration between FAAN and the NSA Airport Security Collaboration aims to streamline security procedures, ensuring a smoother experience for passengers. By reducing unnecessary checks and enhancing surveillance capabilities, the initiative seeks to prioritize both safety and efficiency.
