Ground handling remains one of the most important parts of aviation operations, Dr Afolabi, Chairman of Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has said. According to him, the sector forms a critical link in the aviation value chain, ensuring safe, secure and efficient air transport. He also stressed that continuous investment in technology, equipment and people will strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Represented by the Managing Director of SAHCO, Mrs Adenike Aboderin, Dr Taiwo Afolabi spoke at the International Conference of Aeronautical Engineers. The conference, themed ‘Aeronautical Engineering and National Development: Repositioning the Nigerian Aviation Industry’, brought together industry leaders, engineers, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss the future of aviation in Nigeria.
Dr Afolabi highlights ground handling importance
Dr Afolabi identified five major elements that make ground handling the backbone of safe air transport. They are safety, security, operational efficiency, modern equipment, and a skilled workforce. According to him, these pillars ensure aircraft are handled professionally while supporting reliable airline operations and passenger confidence.
He said SAHCO remains focused on embracing innovation, adopting global best practices, investing in modern equipment and developing highly skilled personnel. According to him, these efforts are necessary to meet the changing demands of the aviation industry and maintain high operational standards across airports.
“The aviation industry depends on strong partnerships and continuous innovation. Our commitment is to ensure that ground handling services continue to support safe, secure and efficient air transport while meeting international standards,” he said.
Dr Afolabi noted that the conference offered an important opportunity for knowledge sharing, strategic partnerships, technological advancement and meaningful policy discussions. He added that such engagements would help build stronger institutions capable of supporting Nigeria’s aviation growth.
According to him, collaboration between government institutions, academia, development partners, industry stakeholders and the private sector remains essential. He described aeronautical engineering as one of the most important drivers of aviation excellence. According to him, engineering supports aircraft safety, improves operational efficiency, encourages technological innovation and develops local technical expertise needed for a competitive aviation sector.
