Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) PLC is strengthening Nigeria’s air cargo competitiveness through enhanced equipment, modern infrastructure and stronger stakeholder collaboration. The company says these investments will improve cargo security, operational efficiency and service delivery while positioning Nigeria for greater participation in global air freight operations.

The Chairman of SAHCO PLC, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, highlighted the importance of these measures at the company’s Cargo Stakeholders Forum in Ikeja, Lagos. Represented by the Managing Director of SAHCO PLC, Mrs Adenike Aboderin, he called for stronger cooperation across the aviation cargo value chain to improve performance and support international trade.

Enhanced Equipment Targets Cargo Security and Efficiency

SAHCO has introduced several equipment upgrades to strengthen its cargo handling capabilities and meet changing industry demands. These include a dual-view X-ray machine for advanced cargo screening, an explosive trace detection (ETD) machine, a 16-tonne forklift for heavy consignments, and specialised cold-chain handling capabilities.

The enhanced equipment is expected to support more effective cargo screening, improve the handling of oversized shipments and protect temperature-sensitive goods. These capabilities are particularly important for pharmaceuticals and perishable products, which require appropriate handling conditions throughout the transportation process.

Dr Afolabi stressed that the air cargo sector plays a vital role in connecting markets, facilitating international trade and supporting economic development.

“In today’s interconnected global economy, the speed, reliability, security, and efficiency of cargo operations are critical to the competitiveness of businesses and the growth of our nation,” he said.

The SAHCO Chairman added that the company’s success depends on the performance and cooperation of every stakeholder. Airlines, freight forwarders, regulatory agencies, cargo agents, importers, exporters and other service providers all contribute to the efficient movement of goods through Nigerian airports.

Infrastructure Expansion Supports Global Competitiveness

Beyond enhanced equipment, SAHCO has expanded its cargo build-up operational area to improve workflow, optimise available space and accommodate growing cargo volumes. The expansion complements its equipment investments by supporting smoother cargo movement and more efficient handling processes.

The company said these improvements reflect its commitment to strengthening operational processes, embracing innovative solutions and enhancing customer experience. Together, the upgrades are intended to help reduce operational bottlenecks and improve the reliability of cargo services.

Dr Afolabi also highlighted the addition of a 16-tonne forklift to the company’s equipment fleet. The machine will improve SAHCO’s ability to handle heavy and oversized consignments while supporting loading, offloading and cargo movement.

The company further emphasised the importance of cold-chain handling capabilities in protecting cargo integrity. Improved temperature-sensitive cargo handling can help reduce the risk of damage and support businesses that depend on the safe, timely transportation of sensitive goods.

These investments also reinforce SAHCO’s commitment to cargo security, regulatory compliance and the protection of shipments entrusted to its care.

Stakeholder Collaboration Remains Critical

However, SAHCO maintained that enhanced equipment and infrastructure alone cannot guarantee operational excellence. A skilled workforce, strict adherence to safety procedures and effective communication among industry partners remain essential to achieving consistent service standards.

The Cargo Stakeholders Forum provided an opportunity for industry players to discuss operational challenges, share feedback and explore practical solutions. Discussions focused on reducing cargo turnaround times, strengthening security standards and improving trade facilitation across airport cargo operations.

Participants also called for concerted efforts among stakeholders to strengthen cargo security and address bottlenecks affecting airport cargo logistics. Their recommendations highlighted the need for coordinated action across the cargo value chain.

SAHCO reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an open-door policy and using stakeholder feedback to improve its services. The company said continued engagement would help refine its operations and respond more effectively to customers’ needs.

Enhanced Equipment Positions Nigeria for Greater Trade Opportunities

Nigeria’s ability to compete in the global air cargo market depends partly on the efficiency, reliability and security of its airport handling infrastructure. Investments in screening technology, heavy-duty handling equipment and specialised cargo facilities can help address operational constraints and improve service delivery.

For SAHCO, the latest upgrades represent a practical step towards meeting evolving cargo demands. Nevertheless, sustained progress will require continued investment, workforce development and closer coordination among airlines, regulators, freight forwarders and cargo operators.

By combining enhanced equipment with infrastructure improvements and stakeholder collaboration, SAHCO aims to strengthen its contribution to Nigeria’s aviation and trade sectors. These efforts could help improve cargo handling performance and support the country’s ambition to become a more competitive participant in international air freight.
