V-Pass to Revolutionise Domestic Air Travel
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to transform domestic air travel with the rollout of V-Pass, a biometric identity verification system designed to make passenger processing faster, safer and more seamless. The facial recognition platform will reduce dependence on physical identity documents while strengthening aviation security across Nigeria’s domestic airports.
Developed in partnership with M/S Verxid Technologies Limited, V-Pass allows passengers to verify their identities through facial recognition technology. The initiative was reviewed during a strategic meeting between FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited, where both organisations discussed deployment plans, security measures and strategies to improve the passenger experience.
A statement signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the meeting focused on ensuring the successful implementation of the new digital platform. The authority also outlined measures to guarantee efficient deployment while maintaining high security standards.
Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Adebola, described the project as another milestone in FAAN’s digital transformation agenda. She said the authority remains committed to deploying innovative technology that improves passenger facilitation while strengthening aviation security across domestic airports.
According to her, “V-Pass demonstrates FAAN’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve passenger facilitation and aviation security across domestic airports.” She explained that the platform will provide every traveller with a secure digital identity through a one-time enrolment process.
Nigerian passengers will enrol using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture. Meanwhile, foreign passengers will register with their international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and biometric authentication. The system will verify passenger identities before access to restricted airport areas and again before boarding aircraft.
This dual-verification process aims to prevent impersonation, unauthorised access and identity fraud. Therefore, security agencies will have greater confidence in authenticating passengers before they proceed through the airport. During the rollout, travellers can either complete verification through self-service kiosks or receive assistance from trained FAAN personnel.
The introduction of electronic gates will further automate access to controlled areas. In addition, the technology will reduce queues and improve passenger movement throughout airport terminals. Developers said biometric verification will take less than 30 seconds after enrolment, while first-time registration will require approximately one minute.
The V-Pass platform will also provide airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics. However, FAAN will benefit from a Central Management System capable of monitoring passenger movement, generating operational analytics and supporting future integration with other airport systems.
FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited stressed that data privacy remains a priority throughout the project. The platform complies fully with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), ensuring passenger information is protected. Furthermore, passenger data will not be stored on self-service kiosks or handheld verification devices.
Before nationwide deployment, both organisations will embark on an extensive public awareness campaign. The sensitisation programme will run across television, radio, social media platforms, airport public announcement systems and airline advisories to educate travellers on how V-Pass operates and its benefits.
A live Proof of Concept demonstration and comprehensive technical site assessment will also be conducted before full implementation. Meanwhile, FAAN believes the initiative reflects lessons from previous operational improvements, where efficient passenger identification and movement remain essential for safety and security.
The Director of Commercial and Business Development said V-Pass forms a key part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation strategy. By combining biometric technology with modern access control systems, the authority expects to build a smarter, safer and more efficient airport environment for domestic travellers across Nigeria.
As implementation progresses, V-Pass is expected to redefine domestic passenger processing by combining speed, security and convenience. The initiative underscores FAAN’s commitment to digital innovation and positions Nigeria’s domestic airports to meet evolving global standards in passenger facilitation and aviation security.
