United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has met with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to address rising bird strikes affecting its aircraft. The airline’s MD/CEO, Olubunmi Kuku, led the high-level discussions in Lagos. The meeting focused on environmental safety, airport infrastructure upgrades, and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) support.
The United Nigeria Airline delegation, led by Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, highlighted the operational and financial impact of bird strikes. Prof. Okonkwo also noted challenges at Category II airports, limited operating hours, and the rise in unruly passenger behaviour. A request was made for land allocation in Abuja to develop a local MRO facility.
FAAN Managing Director/CEO Olubunmi Kuku stressed that collaboration is essential to improve aviation safety and efficiency. She confirmed FAAN is implementing environmental measures to reduce bird strikes, including better habitat and grass management, while promoting corporate responsibility around airports.
FAAN announced plans to upgrade airfield lighting at Category II airports, including apron and lighting improvements at Benin Airport and lighting enhancements in Jos.
The airport managers also pledged stricter enforcement against unruly passengers and showed willingness to fast-track the proposed Abuja MRO land allocation.
Executive Director/COO Osita Okonkwo noted that sustained cooperation between airlines and airport authorities remains vital for safe and efficient industry growth. “Collaboration ensures both operational efficiency and passenger safety,” he added.
Other members of the United Nigeria leadership team present included Linus Awute, Director of Administration; Capt. Ahmad Mahmoud, Director of Flight Operations; Raphael Uchegbu, Chief Commercial Officer; and Kelechi Violet Asuquo, Director of Human Resources. Their combined expertise strengthens UNA’s growth strategy and commitment to aviation excellence.
Meanwhile, United Nigeria Airline and FAAN plan continuous monitoring of bird strike trends and airport safety measures. These initiatives aim to reduce disruptions and reinforce Nigeria’s aviation safety standards.
The proposed Abuja MRO facility is expected to enhance local aircraft maintenance capacity. By investing in infrastructure and collaboration, UNA seeks to ensure operational resilience and improved passenger experiences.
