United Nigeria Airlines has announced the signing of a landmark agreement with Southwest Airlines for the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
This milestone marks a new phase in the airline’s strategy and strengthens Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global aviation market.
The Boeing 737-800 is known for its modern design, impressive efficiency, and passenger-friendly cabin. For United Nigeria Airlines, the jets will expand domestic, regional, and international routes.
They will also reduce fuel costs and minimize environmental impact, giving the carrier an advantage in cost management.
With a versatile range of 2,935 nautical miles, the 737-800 can operate effectively on both short-haul and medium-haul networks. Its cabin accommodates up to 189 passengers in a single-class layout, offering wider seats, larger overhead bins, and improved lighting to boost comfort.

Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, described the acquisition as a game changer.
“After four years of reliable operations, the Boeing 737-800 upgrade will pave the way for profitable expansion. The fleet will help us launch new domestic, regional, and international services while lifting more passengers and cargo at competitive fares,” he said.
He stressed that the deal aligns with Nigeria’s economic growth agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. “This acquisition will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and boost economic development. It will also provide efficient point-to-point travel for Nigerians and Africans, saving valuable time by eliminating costly stopovers,” he added.
The collaboration with Southwest Airlines also ensures continued technical and operational support. “We must acknowledge Boeing’s strong backing during this process.
The maintenance culture of Southwest Airlines, which aligns with ours, inspired this decision. We also expect training and maintenance partnerships beyond aircraft delivery,” Professor Okonkwo explained.
The airline disclosed plans to acquire four additional Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. This expansion will bring the total to ten, with delivery scheduled between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Dallas, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, praised the partnership.
“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family with its first 737-800. The aircraft will provide superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong returns in today’s competitive market,” he said.
The agreement was facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings, LLC. Anders Hebrand, Chief Commercial Officer of the firm, noted: “We are pleased to have partnered with Southwest Airlines in their fleet modernization. With United Nigeria Airlines, these 737-800s have found an excellent home in the African market, where they will remain productive for many years.”
United Nigeria Airlines continues to position itself as one of the fastest-growing airlines in Africa. Supported by industry partners such as Boeing, Southwest Airlines, and SkyWorks Holdings, the carrier is building a sustainable future.
The arrival of the 737-800 fleet highlights Nigeria’s aviation potential and reinforces the nation’s role in regional connectivity.
