To improve aviation training in Nigeria, Nigeria LNG Limited and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) are backing NCAT infrastructure development and equipment upgrades. This support, part of an Institutional Strengthening Initiative, aims to modernise facilities at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.
The working visit on July 24, 2025, marks a follow-up to an initial needs assessment conducted in August 2024. Officials from NLNG and NCDMB jointly assessed priority areas for intervention. The visit signifies a deepening partnership to reinforce aviation training capacity in Nigeria.
The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), established in 1964, has consistently trained professionals for the country’s aviation sector. Originally created through a tripartite partnership involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the College is now fully owned and managed by the Nigerian government.
In 2022, NCAT was legally restructured under a new Act. This revision empowered the institution to offer academic qualifications in addition to technical training. It is also accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
According to Rector of NCAT, Dr. Danjuma Adamu Ismaila, the NCAT infrastructure development support will help improve safety, efficiency, and quality of training. He noted that global aviation demands absolute professionalism, which begins with adequate training tools and facilities.
NCAT holds the record for training the highest number of instructors globally for five consecutive years, according to ICAO. It also holds Platinum status under the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS programme. More so, NCAT is one of four ICAO-certified Training Centres of Excellence in Africa.
The intervention by NLNG and NCDMB aligns with industry demands and reflects trust in NCAT’s vision and output. The aviation sector requires constant innovation and strict adherence to global standards. Partnerships like this ensure Nigerian-trained professionals remain globally competitive.
“The aviation industry is safety-critical and heavily regulated. This kind of industry partnership is timely and strategic,” said one senior NCAT official.
With support from key institutions like NLNG and NCDMB, NCAT is positioned to sustain its leadership role in aviation training across Africa.
