Reacting to claims about Nigerian airspace radar coverage, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) asserts that these claims are misleading. Consequently, it states that the radar stations in Nigeria, including Kano, Lagos, Abuja, and Port-Harcourt, are serviceable.

NAMA made this clarification in response to a television interview by journalist David Hundeyin on News Central. A statement signed by Engr. Ahmed Umar Farouk, Managing Director of NAMA, revealed that radar services for terminal and enroute flights positively identify and provide air navigation services to airspace users. Nigerian airspace radar coverage.

Regarding the ‘unidentified’ aircraft in question, the NAMA helmsman described it as a security terminology. He said, “In real terms, the ATC knows the aircraft in question, but only they are aware of it.” The violation was in the interest of safety, as a result of adverse weather (serious thunderstorm) on the said date. He said, “The purported circular issued by the NCAA guides airlines to avoid the marked and published prohibited or restricted areas of the Nigerian airspace.”

The agency further questioned the journalist’s understanding of the workings of the surveillance systems, leading to his misconstrued information on Primary and Secondary Radar. “The agency shall willfully volunteer information on her services to anyone who requires them at any time,” Farouk added.

Moreover, on the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria, Farouk stated, “The TRACON system is undergoing a software upgrade and modernization. This process ensures the system meets the ever-growing demand for efficient, effective, and seamless air traffic management services.”

Similarly, on welfare, he contended, “The welfare of Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers, in terms of salaries and allowances, is not in contention. It is incorrect to suggest it is the lowest in the world. NAMA, as a reputable agency, prides herself on ensuring sustainable welfare packages for her staff, especially the Air Traffic Controllers”.

NAMA remains committed to its responsibility to provide safe, effective, economic, and efficient air navigation services in Nigeria. The existence of robust, effective civil/military coordination and collaboration guarantees a secured airspace and air navigation. “We are pleased to say that the Nigerian airspace is safe and secure,” Farouk concluded.
