
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Financial Reporting Council,( NiMet and FRC Partnership) have initiated discussions aimed at enhancing sustainability practices in Nigeria. The meeting, which took place on Monday, 13th May 2024, in Abuja, centered on exploring synergies to advance sustainability initiatives among corporate entities in the country.
NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the pivotal role of climate data in driving sustainable practices.
He emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts between NiMet and FRC, stating, “Climate change is fast becoming a priority for financial regulators. The work we do at NiMet through our weather and climate reports are the foundation for sustainability practices. This partnership will enable NiMet and FRC to jointly develop capacity.”
Echoing Professor Anosike’s sentiments, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary and CEO of FRC, underscored the potential synergies the NiMet and FRC Partnership can produce.
He remarked, “There are opportunities for alignment between NiMet and FRC in fulfilling the core mandates of the two agencies, especially in the areas of sustainability reporting, climate risks, and opportunities. Although we are championing sustainability reporting, FRC is also promoting sustainable practices among Nigerian organizations.”
The meeting, attended by directors and senior staff from both NiMet and FRC, marked the beginning of a promising partnership focused on driving sustainability agendas forward in Nigeria. Through collaborative endeavors and shared expertise, NiMet and FRC are poised to play instrumental roles in fostering a culture of sustainability across corporate landscapes.
