In a bid to propel Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) technology in Nigeria, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is set to inaugurate a public registration portal for drones. This platform at DRONETECX 2024 will streamline the process of obtaining civil drone licenses, fostering interactions among stakeholders.
Spearheaded by the Acting Director General, Capt Chris Njomo, this initiative stepped down three years ago and re-initiated, aims to position Nigeria as a frontrunner in drone aviation within Africa.
NCAA aligns with Keyamo for streamlined aviation licensing and permits process. This move brings relief to the drone sector, which has eagerly anticipated an accessible registration portal, according to Fortune Idu coordinator of the event.
Civil drone operations in Nigeria fall under the purview of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The current administration focuses on expanding air transport utilization and poised to enhance technology applications in the industry. NCAA collaborates with Office of National Security Adviser to advance safe drone activities, fostering wealth creation through stakeholder engagement.
DRONETECX, Idu said, recognizes the transformative potential of RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) for enterprise development. DRONETECX 2024 will conduct an introductory seminar titled DRONE 101 to familiarize stakeholders with drone operations in Nigerian airspace.
Furthermore, DRONETECX is introducing two awards aimed at promoting youth participation in the drone industry. The Drone for Humanitarian Award encourages the use of drones for life-saving endeavors. Additionally, a cash-winning contest focusing on precision drone landing will provide youth with a platform to showcase their skills. Supported by leading companies in the drone industry, UFO and ERE these initiatives aim to foster innovation and growth within the Nigerian drone ecosystem.
The cash reward is N100,000 for winning, and participation is free.
In summary, the collaboration between NCAA and DRONETECX signifies a pivotal moment for the drone industry in Nigeria. “Portal launch and youth initiatives pave way for drone tech integration across sectors in Nigeria and beyond.”
