The Chairman of Air Peace was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) by Abia State University. This latest University honour marks his fourth honorary doctorate, reinforcing his expanding influence beyond aviation into human capital development.
The University staged the conferment during its 32nd Convocation Ceremony, attracting a distinguished audience of academic and industry leaders. The event underscored the institution’s commitment to celebrating individuals who contribute meaningfully to national progress. Therefore, Onyema’s recognition aligns with the University’s broader mission of promoting excellence, leadership, and societal impact.
Leading the institution’s delegation were Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, Dr Agwu U. Agwu, and Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu. Their presence reflected the significance of the occasion. Meanwhile, members of Air Peace’s management team joined the academic community, further strengthening the connection between the aviation sector and the University system.
In his remarks, Onyema reaffirmed his unwavering belief in education as a driver of national transformation. “One thing is certain, I believe in education. Without education, the country is dead,” he said. “The government alone cannot fund it. The private sector must be actively involved.” However, his statement goes beyond rhetoric, as it reinforces the need for stronger collaboration between public institutions and private stakeholders.
In addition, Onyema expressed deep appreciation to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for the nomination. He noted that the University honour reflects his long-standing contributions to Abia State and Nigeria. This acknowledgement highlights the growing recognition of private sector leaders who actively support education and development initiatives.
University Recognition and National Development Impact
The University’s decision to honour Onyema underscores the importance of sustained investment in human capital. His philanthropic efforts have consistently focused on education, youth empowerment, and social development. Therefore, this recognition strengthens his role as a bridge between enterprise and societal progress.
Meanwhile, Onyema’s expanding list of honorary doctorates signals a pattern of impactful contributions across multiple sectors. His leadership approach combines business success with social responsibility, creating a model that resonates within and beyond the University environment. In addition, his advocacy continues to inspire greater private sector participation in education funding and reform.
